Question: Well it's mostly always sad for the original fans but can you think of any bands recently or within the past 20 years that have so out big time?

I kind of feel this way about Gwen Stefani. I liked No Doubt early on, then she went all rappy/poppy

Liz Phair is the best example I can think of, but she didn't really pull any punches about it. Man, that "How Can I" single was awful.

Well, Green Day to me were never real punk, and I didn't like them, so it was no surprise to me when they became enormously big sell-outs.

Jewel started off as this bohemian, barefoot guitar playing poet chick. But then her career took a nose dive when acts like Britney and Christina took over the charts. So instead of sticking to her roots, Jewel glammed herself out and put out that piece of pop garbage that had "Intuition" on it.

After everyone started saying "Jewel sold out" and she realized that her "new image" wasn't a hit, she claimed that it was all a joke.

Also, Liz Phair used to be this alt-rock goddess in the 90s. But after she got married and had some kids, she started making pop records like "Why Can't I Breathe". People said she sold out. She said that was always the type of music she liked to write and anyone who didn't like it could go screw themselves. But it still makes me nostalgic for "Exile in Guyville".

Simple Plan!!!!!!
Their 'No Pads, No Helmets... Just Balls' album was pretty amazing ( i was young and they were the first rock band i listened to)! But their stuff after that SUX.... it's a disappointment...

...Fuel was BEAST when Brett Scallions was the lead singer, now they have a new guy, but they're... ok now, I just don't really listen to any of their new material...

... But, we have to look at it this way... people eventually change and start to find their own sound (or becomes what their label wants them to be), and we just have to except that.

Uh Black Eyed Peas. I mean I'm a fan, its just they arent as great as they were 3 years ago.

like wendy said gwen stefani

paramore
green day for sure
definately jimmy eat world
atreyu's on the path to selling out
metallica

metallica
guns n roses after like 1994
green day

311's first two albums were awesome. I rocked those pretty hard in high school. By their 3rd album just softened up sold out.

Alien Ant Farm was always one of my favorite bands and now no one even knows of them really they sold out. At one point in time they were popular. Also Puddle of Mudd did too and that was another favorite of mine.

Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Avril Lavigne (although she was always a bit of a poser...)

FALL OUT BOY

Green Day

Milli Vannili !

two come to mind. metallica after cliff burton died. jason newsted turned the band in a different direction that wasnt too bad until the load and reload albums. and then the crap stain on metallica's history that is the st. anger album. kill 'em all, ride the lightning, master of puppets, and ...and justice for all were all metal masterpieces for them. the black album was pretty good too. then it was downhill from there.

the second is guns n roses. axle tried to get the band to sell out and become a pop band. but slash, matt sorum, and duff mckagan were too dedicated to hard rock and so left guns n roses and formed velvet revolver. before the breakup there was appetite for destruction, lies, and use your illusion I and II. now guns n roses is nothing but a joke. axle has been promising "chinese democracy" for the past 12 years and its literally a joke in the music industry now

metallica

How did Metallica sell out?

Anyways, Green Day, not that they were any good to begin with..
