There's no reason to conform to a stereotype, that makes you look like a poser.

I'm also into metal, and some people have said the same things to me, and I don't even care. If they want to strike up a conversation on music, then let's do it, but around here, a girl into metal looks like a cheap slut with greasy hair, or a made - up girl with a metal shirt on, usually of a band they've never even listened to. Why would I want to be like that, just so people will 'believe' I like metal? Screw it, I've got nothing to prove.

Most people can tell by the way I am and the things I say, but other people, the ones who think you're supposed to display it to the entire world otherwise you're a fake, they don't matter. Be you, and only you.

If you are metal you dont have to dress it. your clothes dont make up your personality. So ignore people and do what you are doing.

just be yourself

why you worried about others peoples opinion .. if your a metal head , then your one in your own right!!

im a metalhead but i dont look it either...
and my hair's long i just dont dress like it

Don't do it! Just because you like the music doesn't mean you have to conform to what everyone thinks you should look like. I am a huge metal head since about the same age as yourself. I dress professionally, am a college graduate, and I am about to start my first year of law school. There is no reason you should try to alter you appearance to fit into the stereotypical dress code everyone would expect just because you like the music. BE YOURSELF DRESS HOW YOU LIKE AND LOVE THE MUSIC!

Okay, try growing your hair REALLY LONG. Put in in dreadlocks, for that uber-metal look. Or just shave it off. Nose piercing are ultra-metal - not those hippie nostril piercings, but the septum piercings. Gaged ears are cool, but you might regret them later. (DON'T DO IT!)

Wear a crapload of chains and spikes. Black leather is pretty rad if you're into Motorhead or some band like that. Get a tattoo, preferably with guitars on fire or a dragon battling a skeleton or something.

Wear metal t-shirts, and either really tight or really baggy pants. Doc Martens are functional and oh-so-cool. Please DON'T wear corpse paint, as you start looking comical instead of scary. http://images.encyclopediadramatica.com/... This is not a good look.

Rawk it!

That drives me crazy that some people think you have to look a certain way if you like a particular type of music.
What sense does that make?
If you looked at me you could never guess what music I'm into.

The one thing about METAL is that it is an individual's type of music therfore you can look and dress anyway you dam well please. If others are saying to you that you don't "look" metal then they are obvioulsy total posers who have no idea about the music and that is what truly matters right?

It doesn't matter how you look if you are into metal you don't care what other people think and would tell them to STFU!

Ahaha. Ignore them. I listen to metal almost 24/7. I'm so addicted to it... It's insane. But the way I dress/act obviously doesn't reflect that because everyone's like "You like metal? Yeah right... Go listen to your preppy music and stop lying."

Just listen to whatever you want and ignore the people that say you don't look like you listen to your favorite music.

take this advice from me. i have listened to Metal eversince i was 7 years old. people stereotype us as goths and crap but were not. if they are saying you dont look metal, then show them that you can bang your head better then them.Me all i wear is jeans and a black shirt that has a sk8 company or a good band. i even wear white, pink blue red and once a purple shirt and i still go play shows. i make the crowd go crazy. dont think of your image, think of what you like to listen. right now im listening to Machine Head"Aesthetics of Hate" and im at school wearing a striped red shirt. this is a really long and hopefully useful answer.

i love metal but i couldn't care less about being a stereotype. it doesn't matter what you where, the only thing that matters is your love for the music.

Neither do I. Music isn't about fashion, is it? Metal is not about conformity. Don't change your look and style to fit in with what people think a metal head should look like. Just be a yourself.

I am a metal head. I have long hair, goatee and a tattoo on my back. I listen to classic thrash metal. I play guitar and bass, but I don't dress like a metal head. I look more like a slob than a metal head.

Yeah what other people said, I went into Virgin (Zavvi) a while ago to get the new Lamb Of God Album, and the girl was all like, wow do you like these then ? You don't look like a fan. I was like HA HA yeah I love them *glare*. Don't worry about other people, or if you wanna change your image a bit dye your hair a funky colour and look mean, no one will mess with you :P

don't mind them. just listen to the music, bang your head and let the balls of fire from above burn their miserable useless life to ashes.

it has nothing to do with how you look it's how you feel inside. you don't need tatoo's, piercing's, dyed hair, black fingernail polish, leather or any of that crap to be who you are. don't worry and keep dressing how you feel and enjoy your music because that's what it's all about. it's not a fashion runway(or whatever they are), don't worry about the phony's.

You don't need to do anything.

Unless you're in a band, it doesn't matter if you "look metal". Dress how you want, listen to how you want.

If you ARE in a band and you're getting those comments, then it's a bad thing bookings-wise. You need to pick up a copy or two of CIRCUS and HIT PARADER and dress likewise.

Did you fall for that old "only the cool kids smoke, just try it" That line is just as much bull**it as people telling you that you don't look metal. Listen here, I am 39 years old, real short hair, mostly grey, people ask if I was ever in the military. Just a few months back I was at a Drowning Pool show in a pair of jeans and a golf shirt, nobody looked at me sideways. I guess the bottom line is YOU are as metal as YOU want to be. If it really bothers you that some people think you don't look metal enough, try this, tell them to go f**k themselves.

lots and lots of black and more black
and dark black makeup
and look mean

You ought to look the way you want to look and what type of music you listen too doesn't necessarily equate to a "requirement" to dress the part.

I'm a CPA who is politically and by appearances very conservative. I love heavy metal music and I'm pretty open about it. Frankly, I don't care what either crowd thinks. I am who I am. Take it or leave it.

damn girl, you're preching to the choir. I've been listening to metal since I was about 11 as well. I'm 16 now and I get that pretty often. But thats mainly on the days where I have to dress overly conservative for certain occaisons. I look pretty metal. You might be able to tell that by looking at my pic. I have plenty of piercings, I wear band t's all the time. etc. the works. BUT, alot of people are surprised when they find out that I'm 16 and I listen to bands like; Testament, Annihilator, Kataklysm, Oblige, Venom, Obituary, Devildriver, Walls of Jericho, etc. So, I'm with ya sister!

the best way is to be yourself.........
forget the f**in posers they keep on saying things like that........
....keep headbangin.....

Well, I don't know what you're possibly doing wrong. It's quite easy, and you really don't have to try too hard.

Get a whole bunch of GOOD Metal band T-Shirts ex: Slayer, Necrophagist, Decapitated, Cannibal Corpse, etc... And wear them. Try getting a facial piercing or two, don't wash your hair for a week, and have at least one tattoo that's easily accessible for show.

I'm a guy and all I do is dress in jeans and a t-shirt all day, shave my head, have a lot of tattoos, and a few piercings. I guess the point is, don't try too hard. If you're metal enough, people will just get the sense.
