totally! It's going to be lots of hard work though! But true, DVD's and books are far cheaper than lessons, and while thats a hands on experience, you can totally develop your own style learning by yourself. I'm teaching myself guitar and let me tell you though - its sooo easy to just stop practicing for a while and soon the instrument ends up laying in the attic.
Lessons force you to keep going and learning with the instrument - so to teach yourself you realllllllly have to be totally commited. Also, I'd definetly pick up not only a 2 or 3 books, a teach-yourself-violin DVD, but if you have not yet bought the violin find a reallly good music store reccomended by as many people you know and put your total blind trust in them to make sure they get you a good violin to learn on. I think the hardest thing for you will probably be learning how to read music, but it can definetly happen no worries. I'm 15 and we had some simple basic music training in school up until when i was about 10 then we were forced to play the recorder for a year, then I picked up saxophone and im learning guitar and attempting to play keyboards. Music's tough, but you gotta love it.

(p.s. what i thought was really cool was I was walking by the music shop the other day and there was a electric violin - sweeeet!)

Sure, it's possible. You will have better luck taking a few lessons, though - someone to actually SHOW you how to hold the bow correctly, where your finger placements should go, etc., etc.

Hope this helps.

I'm 55 and i'm still tryin to play fiddle,However my wife took it away from me for 1 year ,cause tha dog chewed ah hole in tha door to get away from tha sounds i was gettin out of it ,but don't get discoureged, first learn to tune it,its tha opiset of ah guitar, same as ah mandolin tuning, if your real serious get ah video or tha computor probably shows it somewhere. don't quit no matter,,,you can do it,,,

You're not, at all, too old to learn the violin, but you need to find a teacher. See:

I would say, absolutely not. The benefits are enormous and you don't have to feel at all odd about it. There is one YahooGroups, "Beginning Adult Violin Study" (bavs) which has been online for eight years now and has over 3,000 members. This is a great place to get acquainted with other adults on the same path.

Initially, beginning students may come to realize that the violin is harder than they thought it was going to be; it takes at least five years to get into the violin. The beginning stages may be difficult for adults who are accomplished in other areas. In some sense, they have to become like children again, playing Twinkle and other simple pieces. It may also be difficult for busy adults to integrate consistent practice time into their busy schedules, but many adults manage to do this and have great success, enabling them to play in local orchestras, play gigs with friends, etc. The advantages of the mental and physical efforts needed to play an instrument far outweigh any drawbacks. If you have children, in particular, it is an advantage for them to see their parents give importance to this sort of effort.
