Alex Lifeson has two things he could be using for the effect. First, he might be using a high-gain pedal; probably something like a Tube Screamer. It will boost the signal without distorting it too much. The second thing is that he's using a hollow body guitar. If you've never used one before, you wouldn't know how easily they distort a signal to the amp. He may not even have had to use a pedal if his volume on both the amp and his guitar is turned up. Hollow body guitars are notorious for feedback at any appreciable volume, but a good guitarist can control the fickle beast and get some great effects out of it. If you ever have the opportunity, check one out and try and control it yourself - it's pretty amazing.

Well when I try to do that on my guitar I sit very close to the amp and turn the treble on full and the tone switch with distortion or it can be all easily done by a pedal I think he did with a pedal since he wasn't near a amp.
