Well, an excellent amp for under $500 is the Line 6 Spider 3 75 watt amp. It had an amazing range of tones, plus a couple hundred pre-programmed tones so you can sound like your favorite artists. I bought it for $250 because of some sale, but they usually cost 300. If you're looking for something a little more expensive, I've heard that the Marshall MG100HDFX/MG412 Half Stack gives you the bang for you buck, and has different sweet digital effects. That one will cost you $600.
Well, I have a Vox and it was under 500 and it works very well, so that would be my suggestion
Over 500 would be the Vox AC30 in my opinion but it's very subjective and also depends very much on what styles you play in or what sounds you want.
