How hard would you have to hit a violin?!

Question: how hard would you have to hit a violin to damage the bass bar? My friend thinks he may have done this, but I don't think so. The scroll end fell about 4 inches. No damage done, right?

A fall that small should not dislodge or damage the bass bar provided it was glued correctly in the first place. The sound post or bridge would be the first things to move or get damaged.

Take it to a luthier and he can have a look inside with a small mirror. It will only take a few minutes to do this and give an opinion.

it depends on how hard it hit but i really doubt it i've dropped my viola a bunch of times but it doesnt really do any damage... unless the middle is hit or it goes face down

In all likelihood, no damage done. Violins can be remarkably and surprisingly robust. A friend of mine once accidentally hurled his violin across the length of a room and it survived perfectly intact.

You would soon know if any damage to the bass bar had been done - you'd gain a nasty buzz or rattle that wasn't there before.
