"Old" music?!
Question: I'm in 8th grade. Yesterday I overheard a girl complaining to another saying, "Wow!! That song is ancient! It's already 2 months old!" The girls kept on complaining and I was SO close to saying, "Hey! So what? I listen to music from the 60's & 70's!" What's wrong with today's generation? Why do they make fun of old bands?
I told them my favorite bands were the Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, etc. and only a FEW people knew who the Beatles are. These bands are SO great! They're over 40 years old and yet, they complain over a song that is one month old. I listen to classic rock and people try to put me down. They cuss at me saying my music sucks and is "old people music".At least my music lasts for over 40 years & their music barely lasts a month! Why do listen to "popular" music? Why do they let that popular chart control what they listen to? Are there any teens with any sense for real music? And my friends hate me cuz I don't like Jonas Brothers...

I also listened to Oldies (and older music) when I was in Jr. High and High school. I still do. It saddens me that many kids growing up today are only exposed to Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers, and have no knowledge of all the great music of the past. Hopefully as they grow older their tastes will broaden and/or mature. Good for you for going against the norm! As for your friends, just ignore them; everyone's tastes are different and they shouldn't hate you because of it.

more power to you, seems like you have better taste in music then your friends, just ignore them once out of school this stuff will not matter, but you are awesome the music you listen to stands the test of time, meaning that it is simply great.

The bands you like are great bands....they don't make music like they used to. That's why they call is "Classic" because it will always be great. I know how you feel...I'm in my 20's and love Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac, and people think i'm nuts, but oh well...at least i've got taste! lol
I applaude you for your great taste in music and listening to what you want to and enjoy instead of following the crowd....The bands and people you listed are legendary

So what if you listen to old bands and dont like the jonas brothers?, i also listen to old band to, like queen the beatles and the rolling stones i think they're great! and if your friends hate you for something that small than dump them for people who like you for your personality not who you listen to

I am in the same boat with you. I like Bob Dylan, Van Morrisson, the Doors, Pearl Jam and all the ones you listed too. You just gotta shrug it off, these bands are still popular even though the times have changed. They relate to people, whereas the new bands out today are just shallow and commercialized. ahhh..to be young again. I am impressed by your musical taste being in the 8th grade and all.
I listen to quite a bit of different music and classic rock is one of my favorite genres. I think that a lot of people nowadays don't understand what the music actually means and they just listen to new stuff because they can connect better with the feeling and emotion in new music than they can with older music. About them saying that it's old cause it's from two months ago, they could have just been comparing it to a different song. It's all a matter of your viewpoint and yours is different from theirs.
Who are the Jonas Brothers?? haha, I've seen so many questions about them, I have no idea who they are! I agree, "old" music is much much better, it's timeless, which is what I love about it. I'm into all of the bands you mentioned, I was lucky enough to see The Who twice, and there were just as many young people there as there were older people...I think lots of teenagers appreciate good music, which is a relief because people who only listen to the current top 10 hits are in my opinion, parochial and quite irritating. Yay for us though haha...
Congratulations on being able to recognize good music, unlike your friends who think today's crap is good. I'm 18 and I, too, listen to mostly classic rock and have been doing so since middle school. I think as you get older you'll find more people who like the music you like and some of those friends who make fun of you will end up liking classic rock in a few year. At least that's what happened to me. In middle school, I only had 3 or 4 friends who like classic rock and now I have more friends who like classic rock than ones that only listen to today's music.
I'll answer the, "Why do [they] listen to 'popular' music?"
In some cases the appreciation may be genuine. There's still good new music out there.
But, what matters to your peers? If 8th graders are still somewhat like when I was an 8th grader, acceptance and peers mean a lot to many. So if Billboard says Hannah Montana is popular... then all those who worry about popularity are going to like Hannah Montana. It can be scary to operate on the fringes of "accepted society."
And, before casting too many aspersions, the only reason you probably know about the Beatles, the Who, Jimi, Credence, Queen, Floyd, Zep, etc. etc. is because in their charting years THEY were the music that the popular groups listened to. ;) Let's face it, there are many more bands from the 60s-80s that you'll never hear because they weren't popular enough; heck, then *I'll* ever hear and I grew up in the 70s and 80s.
The good thing about the MP3/iTunes revolution is that you don't have to have a radio along to listen to hours and hours of the music you like best. You're not chained to the Top 40 charts or whatever Clear Channel decides you should listen to.
Don't get me wrong - I like your choices, and that you're striking out to find on your own what you like best. (Maybe because I also listened to 40s-60s music when I was in 8th grade... ;) ) But only time will tell if anyone remembers Hannah Montana twenty years from now (heck, who remembers Miley's dad Billy Ray today? Is Achey-Breakey Heart still popular???)
Anyway, enjoy your music! It'll last your whole lifetime!
