I've been in choir for several years, and I know a few voice exercises that will help you!! First of all, you should try to drink plenty of water while you practice. One exercise that is very helpful is the SolFege tones. They go like this: Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do! Every time you sing one of those you get higher and higher until you say all of them. Just try to sing random noises. And if you can't go very high or very low, that's okay. People who sing in low voices are called altos, and people who sing in high voices are called sopranos (thats what i am) so I hope i helped you, good luck!!!
Get a professional singing coach. Don't go near karaoke machines. Remember that just because you're allowed to get up in front of the congregation in church doesn't mean you have talent -- just guts.
I also read somewhere that if you put a plastic bucket over your head and sing, you can hear what OTHERS hear, and it helps you realize whether or not you actually can sing.
Try some vocal exercises or get a professional singing coach, and make sure you breathe properly. Sit up straight, and breathe from your diaphragm. Try not to move up your shoulders.
