When Did Jimi Hendrix Become a Hit in The States?!
Question: Mid-1960s, after being a hit in the UK. His records weren't selling in the US until his legendary performance was noticed in the documentary Monterey Pop, which I think was in 1966.
My husband saw him play live once, including playing with his teeth as well as many guitarists do their hands. Amazing.

Why would you ask a question that you could easily just look up on wikipedia.org? Do you email your doctor when you need an ambulance?
edit: why would he be invited to play at the biggest rock music festival up until that time if he didn't have popularity already?
edit 2: my apologies then. I just see so many things on here that people could be looking up themselves.
I think it's when he played The Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock that he became a big hit.

It was in 1966 when the 'Are You Experienced?' album was released. 'Fire' and 'Crosstown Traffic' created a mania. Nobody played guitar like that before! This was before Monterey Pops and 3 years before Woodstock.
to my knowledge it was after his performance with other bands called monterey i think. if u go on vh1 there might be the video of the special they did on that
