What is the next big thing in music?!

Question: Emo is gaining a lot of resentment, crunk is turning into the hairmetal of hiphop (the popular stuff is entirely processed now), pop-punk is dominating the industry now, but shows signs of weakness, and pop-trash like Britney Spears are being rejected for out-of-nowhere singer-songwriters (most of whom try too hard, this trend will likely not last more than a few years). Popular alternative seems so boring, and I can't see nu-metal like Linkin Park or metalcore like A7X topping the charts for that much longer. So what comes after this awful era? What will the early 2010's look like?

progressive rock is starting to creep in.

Gunther and alikes will conquer the music biz and we will all grow a mullet.

Just for your information, A7X hasn't been metalcore for years now. They're just pop rock now.

The next big thing is probably pop punk with hardcore influences, such as the band Farewell. In my opinion.

My geuss that the early 2010's will be filled with Britsh Pop-Rock like Def Leppard and McFly. Only reason why i say so, is that Def Leppard is making a HUGE Comeback (Hit Parader even said so) and McFly is really big in the UK.
Pop is becoming so poupular, and half of the poupulation wants Rock back, so Def Lepp is getting a bigger fanbase.
So i say British Pop Rock is gonna be big in a few years.

the next big thing is artists are going to be forced to produce good records due to itunes and the internet downloading. If I can test drive all the tracks and decide which ones to buy individually, they're not going to maek $12 or $15 off me buying a whole album anymore. they will have to produce more and better tracks so people will download more of their songs, instead of having 1 or 2 singles on an album and the rest is dreck.

THRASH METAL ALL THE WAY

I would say music today (all genres) is mostly over polished. Nickelback, Daughtry, and Simple Plan like bands are really getting too much to take. I am not predicting but i wish that a similar style of music to the 90s comes back. In the 90s alternative bands were alternative because they did not sound similar to each other or any one else. Today all rock/ hard rock/ pop punk acts are labeled alternative. For God's sake call it what it is. Nickelback is NOT alternative. So I would be delighted if that kind of music music comes back. The likes of Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Malfunkshun, Blind Melon...... That was music.

So a few obviously sucky bands get a little popular and you're prepared to write off the entire half-decade as a "sucky era"? Who cares what is "dominating the industry," as you say? The industry does not matter because it is a business.

There will not be another "big thing." There isn't any "big thing" now. Only a relatively small percentage of the population is currently riding any of the numerous divergent bandwagons, so there's currently no one thing that everyone is involved with, and I don't foresee there being anything like that for a long time if ever.

What will happen is a continuating of what is happening now: Radio play will become less and less important. Ease of exposure will open up opporunities for previously small bands with cult fanbases to expand (many of them have been riding it out for years or even decades, and are only just now being discovered by the general populace). The music landscape will continue to splinter and divide to the benefit of all.

I hope it's Wolfmother. Their second album is coming out soon. They're already pretty well-known and are receiving a lot of critical acclaim. If bands like them are the next big thing, I think rock can be not only saved, but rejuvenated.

I hope Power Metal, Folk Metal and Melodic Death Metal make BIG waves through the United States, soon...

my band is the next big thing...

although i agree that prog is starting to silently influence everyone.
