I love your interest by the way- I am a bari player myself.

I started playing the sax in grade school, but that doesn't mean its too late for you. If I were you, I would contact my local music store (Guitar Center, Paiges Music, etc) and find out if they have any listings for private teachers in your area.

Hopping in head first is not a bad idea- but to a certain extent. I don't know if you're talking about jumping in a band or something, but if you mean about a driving passion- more power to you!

You obviously need to start with the basics, but depending on how well you catch on, the basics may fly by. Also think about this: Find a beginner instructional book (like they use in grade schools and middle schools) and teach yourself the basics. They didn't always have private teachers, so someone had to teach themselves how to play somewhere along the line.

As for your interest in the bari- I wouldn't start out on it. I learned to play alto first (both are in the key of Eb). It'll be easier to maneuver with and you'll learn if its really something you want to do before you fork out the money for a $3,800 bari sax. Try to find a friend who may have an alto (or tenor if you prefer) to borrow while you learn or until you can afford one (if that's an obstacle).

Hope this was helpful!

You should start by taking some lessons to learn the proper technique. With any wind instrument, it's important to have the correct embouchure (the technical term for how you hold your mouth while playing). Any bad habits you might learn might be difficult to unlearn, so it's best to start with proper training. After that you can decide whether continue with lessons or learn on your own.

VERY hard,
but with loads of practise you'll get there.

Very easy, infact the Kazoo is probably harder.

Saxophone is a moderately hard instrument to learn - not as hard as oboe or French horn, but not as easy as piano or flute.

I'd start with the alto. Take lessons with an accomplished saxophonist, and you'll learn to love it more than you could have thought. Hal Leonard makes some good beginner books, and you could even ask the band teachers at a school nearby what they recommend.

Good luck!

I play the tenor sax, but I totally agree that lessons or a class is the way to go. I learned through school, but it is EXTREMELY hard to unlearn bad habits that might occur if you try teaching yourself. The basics are fairly easy though and it's a lot of fun. To get started or find someone who gives lessons, I'd go to your local music store that sells instruments and such. Good luck!!!

Saxes are for faires. Don't play sax...or flute for that matter. You want chicks? Play trombone...or electric triangle.

start with alto
then tenor
then bari
then bass or soprano
then contra bass or sopranino
