Nice question, to answer I will guess that yes they were. I think of all the bands I know they were, them guys have been rocking since the 80s. Warlock was the only other group, but they were after them.
In recent times we've seen the likes of Cradle of Filth, Kittie, Nightwish, Arch Enemy, Within Temptation, etc... They most likely gathered inspiration from Celtic Frost; an excellent band and well ahead of their time.
