There both good but you can't really pick one as they both did there own thing. U2 have been successful over a much longer period however. Depends what floats your boat.

Both bands have their merits, but it's pointless trying to compare bands from different genres.

U2 may have been going longer but maybe the reason for that is that Bono is still alive. Their music however died quite a lot when they started too get to far up themselves.
Phil Lynot lives on in his music and notoriety.
