What exactly is the meaning of the song "Fancy" by Reba McIntire?!

Question: The song is about a mother who is getting her daughter ready to be a prostitute. She does this because her mother knows she will have a better life by doing that, than the life her mother would give her. Hence the lines in the song "Momma's gonna move you up town, and i guess she did".

It's about a poor family with a daughter named Fancy. Her mom is basically getting her ready to go out and become a prostitute so they will have some money for food, rent and medicine because her mom is sick.

When you get right down to it the song is saying that the right kind of prostitution can get you a whole load of money and false sense of social acceptance in high society.

I don't think the song is about prostitution. It's about a teenage girl coming of age living with her single mother and poor family. The mom knows she can't help the daughter to succeed in life, so she bascially trains her to be able to be sexy and get rich men to take care of her as her means of survival. Great song. Gives me chills every time I hear it.

Its about a young girl(fancy) who's mother is pimping her out to make money so she can have a better life for herself.

The instinct to survive comes first, sort the rest out later.

It can be taken two ways, but the basic meaning behind the song was of a woman born into poverty who sends her daughter out to be successful in the world. When the young girl does become successful she is haunted by the thought of how far she has come and the roots she left behind.

It's up to you to decide whether the "red dress" is code for prostitute. This was written by Bobbie Gentry in 1969. She's famous for the song "Ode to Billie Joe" about the "troubled boy" who jumped off the Tallahatchee Bridge. So maybe "scarred" people are part of her repertoire???
