At what age does someone start losing their voice?!

Question: I mean singing voice. I've known a woman in choir who had a beautiful voice about 20 yrs ago. But for the last 5 years ago, her voice is becoming increasingly not good. The strange thing is that she's still very good in the higher range but she insists on singing in the lower ranges and frankly she's terrible. I must add, she's getting a little hard of hearing. I would appreciate all answers but I'd like especially vocal teachers. Thanks

That's an interesting question, and one that's not talked about all that often.

Essentially, I think you're right. Even Frank Sinatra, whose career you can track fairly well by listening to the 30-second samples on iTunes, was about gone in his seventies. (Reference: he was born in 1915.)

I have an aged in-law who was reputed to have a great voice and had a reasonable career in music. But the only time I ever heard him sing was at some sort of family gathering, and it was horrible; he may have been in his seventies at the time.

And I got--from iTunes, I think--a copy of "Happy Trails," sung by Roy Rogers. It was similarly horrible, and I have figured out that this was because it was recorded when Old Roy was, well, old. He was an excellent singer for years.

I don't know how it works for women, but certainly a hearing loss will cause problems. Instrumentalists and conductors seem to be able to work into their nineties, but apparently singers have to know when to hang it up, I guess.

Your Voice sometimes gets wordse when you lose your hearing because you cant hear your self sing so you sing worse. I know that when I sung with someone loud and i cant hear my self sing I sing worse. Its just the way humans work.
