Every good voice teacher will warn you not to clear your throat the wrong way. What you are talking about happens because you are clearing your throat by making a vocal sound.

What to do: take a nice breath, then cough very gently as if you are sneaking around somewhere and do not want anyone to hear you, otherwise you will involve your vocal cords. You may keep at it, but very gently. This way, you involve only what are called "the false vocal cords", which are above the vocal cords themselves, and are what makes the noise when you cough.

To put it into singers terms: the first way we mentioned is done "without support", you just grate and harrumpfff and slam straight into your vocal cords.

However, when you cough, you must first take a breath and then exhale it quickly with speed, or it will not dislodge anything. This way, you support your cough with a stream of air, just as you support your voice, although the sets of muscles in both ways of supporting / exhaling are completely different. If you try it, you will see.

Because I live in a polluted city, I do need to pay attention to this matter, especially in the early morning. I sound like a little frog when I first speak.

I also must blow my nose as a matter of course, or else I end up breathing through my mouth for one thing, and I also find my singing voice severely hampered.

I think I will move to Switzerland !!!

this might sound crazy but eat salt its vary good for the throught

part of the reason is because you are causing strain to your cords when you clear your thorat. The best ways to loosen the stuff in your throat before you sing is to hum and to blow air through your mouth while keeping your lips to gether and letting the tongue and libs vibrate. The will help clear what is in your throat. jDrink wter before you sing

Well, if you strain your voice like screaming of yelling, your voice will be gravelly. Also if someone in your house smokes and you are inhaling it, your throat is getting damaged. Just drink lots and lots of water avoid to talk if you don't need to because the more you talk the less voice you will have during the day and the only way to regain the voice you have loosen during the day is by sleeping eight hours at least a day. Also I sing so this is coming from a person who had that problem.

When you clear your throat, your vocal cords are slammed together. It isn't good for them and can cause long term damage such as legions or cysts. Instead of clearing your throat, drink water or gargle.
