I love 4 strings.
TheFender Precision is the most common work horse on eartrh. The Fender Jazz bass is the most copied bass on earth.
So, not know what you have or what kind of sound that you seek, go with a Fender Jazz Or Precision bass.
USA made are expensive.
Japanese made are less.
Mexican made are even more less.
Korean made are the lowest (Squire line)

four string bass is the most common
however if you want to have a deeper grungier sound you should have a five or six string bass guitar

I'm a fan of Four Strings. Five Strings are just weird, and Six Strings are too much like a regular guitar.

ive never heard of a two string bass,but, the old fender jazz master or precision bass has ben proven over the years to be a capable instrument . yamaha and ibanez makes pretty good stuff too. but anything under three hundred bucks is not gonna be great reguardless of the name
You should learn on a four string tuned EADG. Most of the best bass guitarist learned or still play a four string. I want a five string tuned BEADG. Some bass players go with higher stings like a six or seven string bass. I dont want to go that way. you are getting into the guitarsts range.
