Can someone answer this question about Deep Purple?!

Question: I was watching Deep Purple Live in California '74, and during the song "Mistreated", Ritchie Blackmore plays a slow solo where his guitar sounds similar to a violin. All he seems to be doing is playing like normally, but the sound is very distinct and odd for a guitar. Does anyone know how he makes that violin sound on his guitar?

Some of the other answers are entertaining and frankly rubbish.
It's done by having the volume set to zero (or close to it) then turning the vol up then down again quickly for each seperate note. The experts do it with the little finger of the left hand on the guitar's volume knob. It can be done using a swell pedal, or similar, on the floor (and therefore using a spare foot!)
Geoff

yes

an amp setting or effect.

well if he is an expert on guitar he can do about anything with it

probably using a " volume control " pedal, or using the one on his Strat .

either its an effect achieved by specific settings on the amp, or some sort of dubbed over effect during that show....there might also be something on the guitar itself that switches to that sound....but once again that would be realted to the settings on the amp.....iv played around on my guitar and achieved some weird sounds with my amp i even got accordion once!

He used a screech petal

He uses a similar principle.

You can hear it on his Rainbow-era records a lot.

I'd check out this website, it's great for Deep Purple fans and has a FAQ and maybe it might be helpful.
