All of those groups did hugely impact the music industry. But I think that you're missing two major players... Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones.

I say that they have definately impacted the world of music, but people aren't taking it for what it really is. Back in the 60's, 70's, 80's, people actually chose the music over others because it was superior, it sounded amazing. Nowadays, if you see someone with a Pink Floyd, Beatles, or Led Zeppelin shirt on, and you start a conversation with them about the band, they will have no clue what to say. Ask them a favorite song, they dont have one or they like them all. It's always the same. They just want to feel retro or be like someone else who likes them. I bet that more than half of all people like that have never heard the band before, and just got the shirt because it 'looked nice'. I once was wearing a Dark Side of the Moon shirt, and a 'gangster' next to me was wearing the same exact one. He was like 'Oh, yeah. This shirt looks cool. Can't figure out hat it means though'.
People should start basing their musical interests off of what intrigues them, not others....but i did impact music....just not as great as it could have...not their fault though.

I think those "baby boom generation" bands have had more time! In 50 years, bands like REM or U2 may hold the same sway as those bands you mentioned do now.

It's hard to tell how much long-range effect an artist has until it's been awhile.

P.S. have you heard of the condition called "Boomeritis'? It's when people from the baby boomer generation are convinced they were the most influential generation EVER. It's really annoying to us echo-boomers. I mean, really, haven't you annoyed us enough just by being our parents?

If we're just talking about modern rock music, I think you'd need to go back further and see who influenced these people. For example, John Lennon and Eric Clapton have both stated that Chuck Berry was one of their influences, so I'd list him instead of those two.
