I want to write a song. Where should I begin??? (I know how ot play piano, drums!

Question: ...or you could start with the lyrics. What do you want the song to be about? What genre of music? Songwriting is VERY involved, and whether you start with the rhythm, the melody or the lyrics does not matter nearly as much as the fact that all of those must fit together.

You have to put yourself in the audience at all times... will the lyrics make sense to the average person? Will the melody be memorable? Is the drum part actually intended to keep the song on beat?

Knowing your audience is one of the most important parts of song writing.

As a songwriter who plays the same instruments as yourself, but including bass, I tend to write with either a guitar or piano on hand, writing the part for that instrument at the same time as I'm writing the whole song. I tend to write the music first, then the lyrics. I choose lyrics based on the "flavor" of the song. Choose language that is appropriate to the same flavor.

Then you continue writing the parts for whatever instruments you didn't use in the first round.

Most people are not just born with a talent for songwriting. Like any other type of creative writing, it must be developed. Stick with it!
