I'm going back to the origins and saying Buddy Holly (even if, as with most 'solo' artists, he had a backing band), followed by Bob Dylan.

I'd choose Jackson Browne.
Mr. Bob Marley. He showed that despite all the set backs you may have, poverty, not the best voice, you can make it big. His music still plays all over the world years after his death and it is hard to find a person who doesn't like his music.
I would like to give an honourable mention to David Bowie. Eyeliner before emo.
I know it may sound korny but I think Elvis had the most influence on Music, as an individual artist.
