Living Colour, and Fishbone. I'd have to say culturally, black musicians get into music through school programs rather than picking up the instrument themselves, or having mom and dad bring an intrument home from the store. Last I knew, no school music program embraces Metal or Rock to well. But if mom or dad brought an instrument home, you can practice, and go nuts on the instrument all you want, because it's yours. Where as a school program instrument is borrowed, or rented, and kids have specific pieces of music to learn for a recital or progam, play, or concert. And like I said, no school is playing those genres of music. It's like Hockey, (expensive equipment), Golf, (excluded from courses, expensive equipment), skiing, (expensive equipment), Metal and Rock music (expensive equipment). Historically black families don't earn as much as white families, and can't afford to participate in the aforementioned activities without extreme frugality. Rap expense, two turntables and a microphone. Basketball expense, a basketball. Football expense, school/community provided equipment. R and B/Soul music, Four or Five dudes singing acapella, no expense. I'm a black musician that happen to fall into the catogory of mom and dad bringing home instruments that I wanted to play or try out. I happen to fall in love with bass out of all of them (drums, guitar, keyboards, bongos) and I happen to love all genres of music. Almost all except rap, (including, rock, some metal, pop, r and b, soul, jazz, blues, country, some classical, as long as there is a bassist that can be heard, I'm diggin it,) because they almost never use live musicians. That's why!
Kravitz, biracial, Morello, biracial, Slash, biracial, not just black.
Good Question JRDL1981

well metal, there is very few, but there are some great ones, Suffocation has black members and there are others. I guess cause they grow up with rap and feel like they should listen to that instead of embracing hard rock or metal.

Living Colour, Kill Switch Engage. How could I forget Lajon Witherspoon?

It's just more of their culture to prefer rap and hip hop and stuff I guess. I guess there are black band members but I don't know any.

maybe they just dont like to play metal
not a lot of whites like to sing soul

Speaking for me, blacks seem to have a different taste in music and always have.

Those wonderful old blues musicians like Muddy Waters, was not mainstream at his prime.

60's and 70's was the Motown Rhythm and Blues, Wilson Picket and James Brown. I loved Otis Redding. Aretha Franklin is wonderful. What a voice. Patti LaBelle too.

90's to now is rap$hit. I hate rap with a passion.

You can't beat Lajon Witherspoon of Sevendust...one of the greatest vocalists in "metal" if you'd like to call it that...hard to say with sevendust, they could be considered metal or hard rock...depends on your tastes. Personally I think the reason there arent a lot of "african desendent" musicians in hard rock/metal is that the "hip-hop" culture is so imbedded in society that every young black child (female or male) wants to stick to the "norm" and just be another "gangsta"...the record companies have a lot to do with it also. Most black musicians in this catagory get overlooked as that they would rather sign a "hip -hop" act than a hard rock metal act. Think about it, wheres the most sales coming from? So, if you want to see more black hard rock/metal artists ,quit buying the "hip-hop" crud and support the genre.

A lot of people like what they grew up with. I, on the other hand grew up in a house that listend to rap hip-hop and soul but I love rock music more than any other.

Agree with Edouble...

I don't know who dave small is, but the rest of those dudes are half-white. Same with Bob Marley... and Hendrix was (black, white & native)...

they are into rap
