Nasal sound when singing?!

Question: Hi. I tried recorded myself singing on the computer and everytime I playback, It sounds like I have a blocked nose! Why is this? Can I do something to prevent this? I don't have the flu btw...
Anyway, whats the difference between singing with throat and diaphragm? Will this help. How though?

Thanks in advance.

Its your placement that is giving you problems. I do have a feeling if you change your breathing technique, it will help. When you breathe properly, the focus on sound will feel like it is coming from a deeper place, verses the upper body and you won't feel like you have to put pressure on your throat to sing.

I shared this answer just now with another person. I will repeat my answer to you about diaphragmatic breathing.

Now diaphragmatic breathing consists not just the diaphragm. It includes all of those muscles in that area working together to create better breathing support. The diaphragm doesn't do all the work, because it works involuntary. It is what you do with the area around it that makes diaphragmatic breathing work.

Here is a frequent exercise I share in this forum. Get in front of a mirror (or if you don't feel like getting up, sit on the edge of your chair right now sitting straight up). Place your hands parallel to eachother with the tips of your middle fingers touching. Now on inhale, don't move your shoulders or upper chest. Slowly concentrate on filling your tummy with air like a balloon. Don't force it. Just do it slowly as if you are a baby (infants and toddlers use diaphragmatic breathing automatically. Watch a baby's tummy the next time they nap. That is how we all should breathe). Your middle fingers will part slightly. You should feel expansion in your tummy area, your sides, and your back. Now exhale SLOWLY. Don't blow the air out. Hiss like a snake if that keeps you from blowing all the air out. Try to conserve as much air as you can as you exhale. By the time you are done, the tips of your middle fingers will touch again.

Try this exercise over and over again, until you get the hang of it. It might be awkward for a minute, and you might feel as if you are doing it wrong because you aren't quite used to the concept. But the more you try it, the more you will get used to it. It will eventually fall in line naturally. You can use the same exercise with singing, but instead of exhaling with the HISS sound, you can sing scales. As you sing scales, continue to conserve the air you can as you go. You will get used to it.

Whatever you do, don't force it. I do it so much now, that I naturally breathe this way day to day. It is what many doctors teach to asthma and respiratory patients to help them get full use of the air they breathe. Eventually it will get into your psyche and become automatic. You also can google "diaphragmatic breathing" if you want to see visuals of how the muscles work. Good look and try the exercise. See if that doesn't physically give you an idea of how it should feel.

Now that this part is over, make sure when you sing you have a feeling of roundness to your tone. If you think fat, your focus from your nose will leave and place into a deeper place inside. Also remember, some voices just have a slightly nasal quality to it. You might be one of those people, but it doesn't mean the nasal tone should overrule your tone. Think round and fat sound from the bottom of your tummy...and perhaps your placement will change without me getting all technical on description. I know you don't want to read that. You just want to grasp the concept. That's what I am here for. Have fun!

Its said tat singing with tne neck sumerged in a pond or river opens up vocal cord nad makes ur voice sweet!
Drinking cold water, eating oily food shd b avoided if u wan 2 b a singer

Open up your nasal passages to get rid of the nasal tone.
Pinch your nose lightly, fairly high up. Make a full sigh, starting from a high note to a low one. Feel that vibration in your nose in the beginning? That is your nasal passages open and vibrating. Learn to sing with them open like that, and the country sound will go away.
Open your throat by pulling back your rear, soft pallet a bit, and more so, by dropping your voice box some. The two together will give your voice much more resonance.
And if you care about how you sound singing, a vocal coach will do wonders. Two of the things I just learned were what I just told you.
