Do you agree that todays rock/metal musicians as a whole aren't as musically!

Question: Even the bands from back in the 80's who are still making music today like Metallica, Ozzy, Bon Jovi, etc. The music that they are putting out these days just isn't the same or complex as it used to be. I know it's good to explore and change up your syle a little but damn Metallica's music went down-hill after And Justice For All and the Black album. What are your thoughts? Also are bands these days more focused on their image than thier music?

During the 70s and 80s metal was rising, experimenting, and becoming something different. Nowadays it seems like everything has already been done, a hundred times over. Now granted there are bands that are doing new and amazing things (Between the Buried and Me is God's gift to metalheads), but music in general is going down the tube, so obviously it had to have started with the musicians. I believe that very soon we will reach the bottom of our musical 'barrel' and then slowly but surely begin our ascent to great music once again.
Bob Rock killed Metallica.

tell me about it. Metallica sucks now. and dont get me started on Bon Jovi...ugh.
todays "rock" bands aren't really rock at all. it's quite tragic if you ask me.

I totally Agree... Music (Rock n Roll).. was so much better in the day..
Its all about sex apeal.. if you arnt classed "hot or attractive" you wont sell a record as good...
it aint about the music no more

Well I'm only 13 so I haven't been around in the 80s to hear all that awesome music that everyone talks about but I listen to classic rock which is way better than all that emo pop stuff. oo oo I love Back in Black by AC/DC. How old are they?

But I like Metallica's older stuff more than their newer stuff even though I wasn't around when it was made.

But I like Bon Jovi's newer stuff.

edit: lol but I like emo pop....P!ATD, AFI, FOB, etc.

Popular music (including metal, which is big profit) can be divided onto two periods.....

Before MTV, and after MTV.

MTV is the best thing to ever happen to the music BUSINESS
and
MTV is the worst thing to ever happen to MUSIC.

As a whole, musicians still suck just as much as they did in the 80's. We don't remember all the no talent bands of the 80's and 90's any more, but they were there, taking up their part of the limelight as well. The biggest frustration that music has had has been the advent of the music video format (video killed the radio star). Now that musicians are being promoted on screen, the prerequisite of a band is to look good, not sound good. You look at musicians in the 70's and 60's. EGAD! they were ugly! but they sounded good on the radio. It all depends on what forum you are selling your wares

The problem isn't so much creative control being given up, it's homogenization. Like mentioned above, when it was new, it was great, but now that the formula has been cracked there is no innovation. Look at Godsmack: awesome first album, but 3 records later they're still playing the same four chord songs. Don't get me wrong, I like the band, but change or die used to be the way of the world. I just checked out my two local rock stations. Do you know what they were playing? Nickelback's "Animals" and Hinder's "Get Stoned". Until bands who sound different can make it big, the world of rock is going to remain a sad place.

hi G! NO, I don`t agree at all my friend. I can agree with what you say about those you mention, but hey man, there are so much more out there. Most musicians today have practiced a lot more than the guys from the `80s did. Why you say, well the competition are harder than ever I am afraid, and if you wanna get somewhere, you really have to be great or better ha ha ha. Listen to some of the hard/heavy/prog/death/black metal stuff, and bands like MESHUGGAH, EMPEROR, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, PAGAN`S MIND, SYMPHONY-X, DREAM THEATER, DIMMU BORGIR. Nobody can say these guys are bad musicians, well they can of course, if they are nutz! ha ha ha, what I mean is that if you look a little closer, you will find music that will blow your mind! In a positive way that is! Peace and love from a music freak in Norway
