archive.org is a great source of free legal music. They have an archive of tons and tons of live shows from thousands of bands.

The last one might be a broken link, I'm on a dodgy internet connection at the mo so I can't tell the difference.
If you go on last.fm and sign up, you can listen to whole tracks on demand for quite a few bands. More are getting added all the time. There's also the radio/tags where you can listen to them.
iTunes has a free song every week. They're not always good, but they can introduce you to new bands.
