Good oboe solos please?!

Question: I'm thinking about entering in my school's solo and ensemble contest, and I need a good solo to play on my oboe. I would prefer one that isn't too hard, probably intermediate-beginner. Even if there are difficult parts, I am willing to practice at them.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I KNOW THEEEEEEEEEEEEE BEST PIECE EVER WRITTEN FOR THE OBOE!

READY?

The second movement from Bach's oboe concerto in D minor. It's UTTERLY beautiful and not that difficult. It's pretty easy actually because it's a very slow movement. It's called siciliano.

Even if you aren't choosing it, listen to it.

I recently bought a CD of Schumann's "Works for Oboe and Piano" (Hollinger / Brendel). There are some lovely pieces for the oboe on this CD. Try listening to it on Amazon and see if there is anything that takes your fancy.

although I do not play Oboe, my good friend Annie does, and really likes Britten's 6 Metamorphoses on Ovid for Solo Oboe. She's advanced, so it's probably a difficult part that you would have to practice.

here's a youtube viedoe of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVbT8XQkJ...

it's really lovely, so you should play it!

good luck!

"These pieces are perfect for contests and concerts. Highly recommended! Perfect for an intermediate oboist who is looking for a fun classical piece. "

=====
Cools, Eugéne
Prelude and Dance for Oboe and Piano
Publisher # PDP 041 $13.00
This was the oboe testing piece for the Paris Conservatory examinations in 1913. It has been long out of print. Cools was a highly respected composer and teacher who ended up as Director of Publications at the music publisher Max Eschig.

Stupp, Mark A.
Tango in D minor for Oboe and Piano
Publisher # PDP 031 $14.00
This work was composed for double reed specialist Dan Duncan while he and the composer were both on the faculty of Texas A & I University-Kingsville. Stupp was an accomplished pianist and his music embraces a lush, Brahmsian approach to harmony. This is a beautiful piece.

I would suggest a Handel Sonata, or one of the pieces in the "Oboe Solos" book, found here:

I have a lot of my beginner-intermediate students buy this book; it starts with fairly easy but nice solos and progresses to some pretty difficult oboe standards.

Not strictly classical music ... but "Gabriel's Oboe" by Ennio Moricone from the movie The Mission is quite doable. Should be within the intermediate-beginner range.
