Where do New York City artists go when they tire of the hustle and the bustle?!

Question: Where can a poet, singer, performer, nascent singer-songwriter, and educator go--to enjoy her work and the laid-back company of other artists and freethinkers who have not lost their spark or their soul?

As an artist and an educator, I love New York City. But at the end of the day, I will always crave community. At 46, I want to continue to explore my art, and to teach. But I also want to slow down, lay back, and enjoy the good company of people who care about each other beyond the current project, show, or gig.

I love the moon over Manhattan, but I miss the ocean, the lakes, the mountains, etc.

Suggestions?

I live in Asheville, NC. I think you would find it to your liking. Smaller town, but plenty of culture and free thinkers. And the mountains are beautiful. And we are sufficiently above sea level so as to avoid the coming melting of the ice caps.

just go out to long island and get lost there.

Montauk or New Paltz, depending on what you feel like doing.
