* Korn, for creating nu-metal, which led to bands like Linkin Park and Deftones.
* Green Day and Blink-182, for punk.
* Mighty Mighty Bosstones for ska.
* Smashing Pumpkins for alt. rock.
* Radiohead for rock, British
* Sunny Day Real Estate for emo. (REAL emo)
* The King, imo, would have to be Nirvana, with their HUGE explosion of grunge.

Metallica ruled the 80's, not so much the 90's
But that's just me.
Nirvana- they completely changed American pop culture and Kurt Cobain is the greatest musical genius since John Lennon's death.
My vote is for Nirvana
From a pure sales perspective, Metallica OWNED the 90's. Musicwise, I'd have to go with The Black Crowes personally...but then again I'm not "in" to 90's music.
As far as 90s' rock I'd have to go with Nirvana too After 80s Glam Rock. Grundge was refreshing.
If I were to count as a "group" not just rock bands, but any musical act with more than two members, you have to include Boys II Men, TLC, and The Dixie Chicks.
But if I had to think of a band that stayed relevant throughout the whole decade, it would have to be The Red Hot Chili Peppers. (Would have been Nirvana if they'd stayed together--or alive.)
