What Are Ways to Help Me With Music While I'm at College?!

Question: This is my last year in high school, I really wanna start out a career in music but I realized that it's way too risky. So I thought that music can wait while I get a degree that can help me to get on my feet if my music thing don't work.

So in the time I'm in college, what are ways to help me establish a good career afterwards? I mean after getting my degree.

Write as many songs as you can, and then work on making them better. Almsot nothing is ever perfect they way you first write it....even if you think it is.

Play as many "shows" as you can, have your live performance perfected by the time you're done with school. Plus if you start getting a following and build some relationships with local promoters you can start opening up for bigger acts that come through.

Learn to play different genres of music. Just to keep you on your toes and introduce you to new styles of playing and different ways to create the sound you want.

If you're talking about being in a band... It's hard work. You have to work for it. A record company will not come to you and give you a record deal. You need to get out there and tour and play as many shows as you can and send demo's and videos to as many record labels as you can.

IT IS EXTREMELY HARD WORK. Lazy people will not get anywhere in the music industry.

If you're talking about engineering or whatever, then I would go to some small record labels and ask for some work experience (ie. Working for them once in a while for free). It looks good on your resume.

Another idea is to become friends with a band, and help them out.

Personally, I don't think that "too risky" is a reason to not pursue a music degree. However, it depends on what you consider to be a career in music. Do you want to play/sing with a rock band? Do you want to teach a wind ensemble or a symphony orchestra? Do you want to just conduct professionally?

I am a musician, but did not get my music degree, I went into commercial graphics. My reason for not getting a music degree was because music was too fun for me. I didn't want it to become work.

As far as keeping myself in music, I enrolled in several ensembles. The university that I went to had so many non-majors that we had to develop two new ensembles geared towards that type of player.

In short, just keep making music when and where you can.
