Which band is better, Mastodon or Avenged Sevenfold and why?!
Question: masterdon have better riff's, they use time signatures, change feel and style, have better arrangements and are better composers.

Slightly off-topic, but appropriate to this thread:
Velvet underground were frequently out-shined by the Doors (who, quite frankly, stole a lot of their music, and, in fact, Morrison was just a watered down, popular Lou Reed knock-off), BUT that doesn't mean the Doors were a better band because they were, too, "world renowned."
It's actually quite a primitive way of thinking.
