I see you got a lot of thumbs down,to what I believe to be a great question,Johnny Cash done a great work on that song. For you people who have no respect for someone new to country music I suggest you go to the proper site.

I cry over bunches of songs...

It is a good song.

One of the all time great singer songwriters, it's an amazing song, and very truthful.

What I like about Johnny Cash is that his songs are believable...I mean, whenever he sang about pain...you can actually believe it.

& Kids don't really get it. Heck, when I was little...kids didnt know who Frank Sinatra was.

It taints it when you know it's actually a Nine Inch Nails song i.e. they wrote it, not him.

Edit to the thumbs-downers: Oh boo-hoo. You all thought it was his own song, right? And you've never even heard the NIN version as performed by the guy who actually wrote it? Have you listened to the words and realised it's about drug addiction? Get over yourselves, morons.

i love johnny cash did you know that 'hurt' was sang by nine inch nails, and that johnny cash covered it in 2002, it was his last hit alive. the video for it won best video of the year in the grammys and country music awards.

I mostly listen to rock/metal, but Johnny Cash was a BADA@S MOTHER**CKER. He was an excellent musician and songwriter. His version of Hurt is a hundred times better than nine inch nails original. Don't worry about what other people think, Johnny didn't. The country music industry turned their back on him when he started doing cover songs of music originally recorded by hard rock bands. It started when he did a cover of Soundgarden's " Rustycage". Rolling Stone did a story about the country music people ostracizing him, check it out if you can, the picture of him shows him staring into the camera flipping off the CMA.
His version of Hurt is haunting.

I actually had a similar reaction to the song, I even wrote a blog about it on my 360 which you can find by clicking on my info.

I'm actually not such a big fan of cash but that song really told a story.

Johnny Cash, one of the greats, what more can one say

The lyrics definitely do bring you down. What makes it worse is to see and hear Johnny Cash perform it. To see once rowdy, charismatic and intense man like Cash, or more like a shell of his former self, singing such a melancholic song just breaks your heart.
NIN performing it still brings out the true emotion behind the song but Cash takes it to a whole other level. Trent Reznor is one helluva writer.

I am 20 years old and have a fairly old taste is music for my age. The first song I heard of Johnny's was hung my head which was good and then I heard hurt. it doesn't make me cry but its a fantastic song. I also think he was a misunderstood person judging by the film.
I found myself however pretending I liked all the trendy music at school
I now fully appreciate my taste in music

You are clearly showing a great deal of intelligence and a very open mind to be able to recognise quality music of a genre that you would not normally listen too. In music there is much reward to those with an open mind.

My voice is very similar to Johhny Cash's so recently I learned to play Hurt on the guitar, really pleased with the result.

Try listening to Johnny Cash and June Carter singing "It Takes One To Know Me" a very beautiful song.

yep johnny cash is/was amazing.
the hurt video made me cry too (though it is actually a cover of a nine inch nails song-johnny cash version is much better though).
my husband got me into him about 2 years ago when i was 22/23.
i didnt like the film to be honest - i felt that joaquin phoenix was a bad choice (he actuallylooked alot like morrisey in that film i thought - i kept expecting him to swing some dafodils around lol).
check out the highwaymen too as he made a couple of albums as part of them too.

One of the all time greats and I'm a big fan. Have a lot of his more popular songs and others as well.

Johnny Cash was great . He had faults (we all have) , but he made some great music (a lot of rubbish as well). The America Series with Rick Rubin is essential listening as well as Folsom Prison , San Quentin

I totally agree with you this song hits you where it hurts straight in your heart.

Trent Reznor of nine inch nails wrote the song and originally did it

I am glad that you are realizing that these old ,dead and gone country singers had some talent, they sang about life, love, cheating

If you go back and check out the stars from the same era i think that you will enjoy their music

its a toutching song
and i suppose that johnny cash has many songs to to with feelings beacuse some of his song make me dance and smile while others make me sit there quiet, thinking

The first time I heard it I was driving and had to pull over and stop the car and yeah I had a lump in my throat by the time it was finished.

I'm surprised that a lot of young people like Johnny cash but you dint realize that his music was mostly played on juke boxes in bars and that a lot of his music was geared for that and you wont here a lot of his music on Cd's or tape cassettes and that is a shame
PS if you are a younger person and like Johnny cash you should listen to a band called " the highwaymen" other singers like Merle haggard wallon Jennings and Chris christofferson and willy nelson all singing together

I personally find the song annoying, so it doesn't make me feel sad or make me want to cry. It makes me feel more likely to smash a windows or punch a wall, but that's just my personal opinion.
