Who is the best rapper and why?

Thats a difficult question to answer. Its also a question not asked by many of todays youth. No one seems interested in the history of hip-hop anymore. In fact I asked my younger cousin a variation of that question and he answered G-Unit. Wow!

Anyway, I can't give you a definite ONE best rapper of all time. I can give you my top 5 and why:

5. LL Cool J - because no other rapper has proven himself more in battle than this cat; longevity. His first single was "I Need A Beat" back in '85 or '86. Legitimately in the business for 23 years, but he'll say 30!
4. Slick Rick - because even though he didn't invent hip-hop storytelling, he perfected it and made it his style. The majority of his songs had a plot; a beginning middle and end.
3. Rakim - many cats put him as their #1 mainly cuz they don't understand what makes a rapper truly great. He had all the tools for greatness, but never accomplished it. He's my #3 cuz he changed the game of lyrics. He was complicated and surpassed the mono-syllabic rhyming scheme which was the norm in his day, thus having cats go back to the lab and re-write.
2. Big Daddy Kane - This cat never gets props for being one of the best (top 5 anyway). Big Daddy went commercial and was the first rapper to sign a huge music deal. He's my #2 cuz lyrically he reigned supreme. If your young and need a taste of what he's capable of, download "Raw" and then try to remind yourself that he wrote that in 1986 (even though the label on the record says 1987)
1. KRS-One - If you don't know who he is, then you can never understand why true hip-hop purists hold him in such high regard. He was a lyrical genius that wrote about our social struggles & political concerns all the while using a lyrical skill that not many can ever touch. Sure he may be a little out there, but he was passionate about hip-hop & his community and his music reflected that.

I'm one of those hip hop purists mentioned earlier, therefore I must decree that this list can and will change. Mainly I'd like for the new generation to get to know these men and understand how their music impacted their father, uncles and older brothers lives. Also, by listening to this music hopefully the younger generation will realize that hip-hop has taken a wrong turn in the last few years.

Hope I was Helpful

I really like busdriver.
I just think he has great skill.
And he's not some sell out with no originality.

need i say more

I think its undoubtably Rakim
He changed rap forever for the better when he dropped Paid in Full
He was the first to use multisylable rhymes in every song, other rappers did it occasionally, but after rakim started doing it he changed rap in one of many ways
He is definitly in the top 3 most influential rappers ever and he influenced every other competator for best ever
and after 20 years of rapping he still can say one line, and rhyme every word with it in his second line
on top of that he has great flow and delivery
and he has 2 classics, getting 1 classic is great, buts hes one of the only with more than 1

tupac doesn't suck

well if you dont want me to mention tupac who do you want me to say, vanilla ice

The R

afroman
he can rap while being one of the funniest guys evr

I would have to say Eazy-E because he RULEZ

Rakim

Nas

I despise most new rappers because all they can rap about is sex..girls..sex...cars..money and more girls...absolutely no taste...you say tupac sucks? Hes an idol..his lyrics are deep and have so much meaning to so many people...his beats are good and his lyrics talk about real life situations from the streets and hardships and struggles...its real and he doesnt suck...

THESE TWO RAPPERS WERE AHEAD OF THEIR TIME.

KRS ONE

AND

RAKIM

(THE HIP HOP CULTURE HAS 2 KINGS)

Toss up between Rakim and Big Daddy Kane.

Rakim changed the game in the way he used multisyllabic rhymes and was the first to drop metaphors and punchlines that made you have to rewind he tape just so you could catch what he was saying again.

Kane came out not too long after Kane and was probably the only emcee who could match the R in terms of lyrical ability and he was also more diverse in his offerings. He could make you think but he could also charm the ladies or make jokes in his rhymes.

To me, those two are the GOATs.

That's a toughy. Rappers on my top list are....

-Xzibit
-Bishop Lamont
-Mobb Deep
-Kurupt
-Dr. Dre

Common.
"Cats say I'm nice with metaphors but these are similes"

NOBODY!!!, I mean NOBODY has better lyrics than Shock G from Digital Underground.

i like Ganstalicious....... that thuggin love song is the shizzle

Too $hort

Don't ya think its funny that you are somehow in a position to say that Tupac sucked when he definitely influenced thousands and thousands of people in the world through his rap; something that you will realistically never do? Hmm.....strange.

There is no best rapper. every rapper has their own style when it comes to rappin. It just depends on how many people like it. like some rappers are lyrical, and other rappers have good beats, it just depends. but if i had to pick a best rapper, it would be kanye west. he's a great lyricist, and even though he samples too much, his beats are new with a retro sound. You should cop his album graduation. that's his best one.

Rakim Allah

Omagus said nuff

Eminem. I like how he is able to f- u - up with words. he spits out of the dome, and lyrically he is sick with the mic and without it too

Dr. Dre
Eazy-E
Bun B (ugk)
Chamillionaire
Big Boi (outkast)

I dont need to give reasons why... just listen
