Do you consider them Sellouts?!

Question: Do any of you consider Atreyu and Avenged Sevenfold sellouts? I was listening to them at my friends house the other day and her older brother (who thinks he is some kind music authority) turned it off and complained about how they both have changed so much and so on. Then he went and got a DVD and had us watch an interview with Alex Varkatzas of Atreyu saying he didn't want the band to change so much that you couldn't tell who they were and he laughed and said "yeah right". Then when I mentioned A7X, I told him Matt couldn't scream or he would have became mute, and all he said was "Well, at least he caould have just put out 4 good metal albums". It made me so mad. Does that bother anyone else or do you agree?

Let's see the definition of "selling out". It is the compromising of one's integrity, morality and principles in exchange for money, 'success' or other personal gain.

This label is put on a lot of bands that sign to major labels from being on an indie label. They are still the same band, it's just now they have the means to put out a better album and get that album to more people than they could before.

A band wants people to hear their music, become a fan and buy it. Whoever says otherwise, is not very smart. There are musical acts that are sellouts, but I would consider going to another genre, like rap or pop, to find them.

Bands change with time, they grow up and change from experiences. There will always be somebody out there putting down the band you love the most, it's because they haven't grown up yet. So ignore them, and listen on! CAUSE A7X ROCKS!!

Yes I do consider them sell outs. Of course, I understand Matt did screw up his voice screaming improperly. It's okay to change, but they both changed to go a much poppier, MTV friendly route and they now have very little or no metal in their music.

Everyone becomes sellouts at some point in time.
He needs to relax.
He's probably some up tight scene boy who thinks that his Job For A Cowboy, and his Silverstein is the best thing ever. He needs to relax, especially if he likes UnderOATH, They sold out too, their newer albums are ****. Everything before "Their Only Chasing Safety" was amazing.

I agree with MikeW.

A band needs to evolve and change, otherwise they will be stuck doing the same thing over and over and people will get tired of them. Artists evolve, it's the way things are. Look at Green Day. American Idiot is nothing like Dookie or Nimrod... you can still tell it's Green Day, but it's not the same sound that it was 10 years ago.

A sell-out is a band that drastically changes its sound in order to receive main-stream approval. I don't think any of the bands you have mentioned have done that. If you want to hear a band that has done that... just look up Sugar Ray. Compare anything off their 14:59 album to their earlier songs. They went from hard-rock to light-rock in one album... consequently getting quite a few top 10 hits off the light-rock style album... but acquiring a huge level of "suck" along the way.

No, I don't. The fact is, music is a constantly-evolving medium, and those who create songs - from writing the lyrics to crafting the music - would be doing both music (in general) and their fans (in particular) a disservice if they never changed.

Your friend's brother is (evidently) pretty limited in what he likes, and is writing off all sorts of potential enjoyment for his "purity". But let's face it: what if he was, say...a Ricky Martin fan? Here's a guy who puts out the same-old Latino-style music again and again, and would YOU want to listen to that over and over?

I didn't think so.

Or think of it this way: even The Beatles, who were arguably the inspiration for several **generations** of musical artists, changed their style significantly (and repeatedly) over the years. If you don't experiment, you don't do justice to the art of music.

Love it or hate it, at least give it a try before judging.

Bands that dont evolve can become boring and unoriginal. Like most of the Metal of todays scene, very unoriginal and very repetitive and yes, I do think they are sellouts.

I think everyone needs to realize what the meaning of sell out IS . Pick up a dictionary and educate yourselves .
Just because they are making money , doesn't mean they are selling out .
I agree with lickthebassist .
Rock on chick .

I hate how people say bands are sellouts. Everyband changes and then people are like ewww. Like you expect their music to always sound the same. I like how their music has chnaged and developed over the years. They're both really good bands.

avenged sevenfold did sellout, it's ok to lighten up on the screaming, but when the screaming left, so did the metal sound, their new albums are way different, and more mainstream sounding. a lot of screamers mess up their voices by screaming the wrong way, but that doesn't mean that they get a free pass to completley change everything about their music. matt tuck of bullet for my valentine had the same problem with his voice, and they didn't change their sound. as for atreyu, i definitly think that they should have stuck with their original sound, i love the album "the curse", and if they had stuck with that it would have been perfect.
