How can I sing with vibrato?!

Question: I'm 14 years old, I'm very musical, I play a variety of instruments including the piano, fiddle, dulcimer, valia, and my favourite, the guitar. My guitar playing sounds very boring without singing, and none of my friends sing. There is nothing I would love more in this world than to be able to sing, but I've been told my voice isnt that good and I think its because I just CANT sing with vibrato! I have no idea how, can anyone PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help me?!?! It would be much appreciated. My dream is to sing like Janis Joplin, but I KNOW that will never happen. Please help me, I cringe everytime I hear my voice and I feel like crying, any tips at all for singing would be GREATLY appreciated! Also, I should mention that I live in an EXTREMELY small Newfie town with a population of about 50 people, the nearest vocal coach or music teacher is 6 hours away. THANKS! You dont know how much this means to me.

First of all, I'm sure you voice isn't as bad as you make it sound. Everyone has their own unique sound, and while you may not be Janice Joplin (she is the one and only) I'm sure your voice is beautiful.

Secondly, I'm also 14 years old and I'm kinda jealous of your instrumental talents. I am basically the opposite of how you described yourself. I play no instruments but I do sing. I'm not bragging at all when I say that I am a talented singer, its just something that comes naturally to me.

I don't really know what tips to give you on singing, except that I didn't get to my level of talent without a LOT of practice. Vibrato is something that some singers can achieve and others can't. Work hard at developing your talent, that I'm sure is there. Most importantly, don't be afraid to sing in front of anyone because you don't think you are good enough. Good Luck!! =D

listen to good singers and try to imitate them. vibrato with your diaphragm is best, not in your throat. listen to tons of sheryl crow (globe sessions, not her other CD's), ella fitzgerald, alison krauss, carrie underwood, trisha yearwood- actually any female country "sanger" has good pipes. that's the only good thing about country- you gotta have an awesome voice to sing it. examples of bad vibrato would be sara evans, leann womack, shakira. you don't have to have vibrato to necessarily sound good, you don't have to belt the high notes but just sing on key and try to have good tone quality and timbre.

The only thing you can do is taking singing lessons, to learn the technique. And don't try to imitate famous singers just by hearing their voices, you can seriously harm your voice.. that's my 2 cents ;)
