Your first question should actually be ... what amp should I buy? Your amp will be a much bigger part of your tone than any number of pedals. Bigger speakers, more watts, and preferably tube vs solid state are all ways to get better tone. But let's assume that you have an amp that works for you.

First off, test run the Digitechs before you get them. I don't like Digitech, I think they sound like crap. Then again, I play through a 4x12 cab powered by a 100 w Mesa Boogie tube amp. I can hear very clearly when digital sounding things enter my sonic space.

I highly recommend Boss pedals. They are built tough, they sound decent, and oh yeah, they're built tough. Drop 'em and they still work. That's important!

If you want a John Frusciante sound, you want a bluesy, warm overdrive sound... start looking at overdrive, EQ, and chorus pedals. A Boss chorus pedal into a Boss EQ pedal into whatever overdrive pedal you can find (Boss OD-2, or maybe a Bad Monkey i guess) into your amp should have a nice warm sound to it... set the chorus pedal to very minimal settings, and probably roll treble off of your amp. Set the EQ pedal to boost mids, cut lowest bass and highest treble.

To make those crying and whining sounds you will want a wah pedal... and think about using a slide, as well. On Scar Tissue, that's how he got that lead sound.

If your amp isn't giving you the distortion you want for a grungey sound, try the Big Muff fuzz pedal by ElectroHarmonix and the Boss DS-1. Both are classic grunge pedals. Getting an EQ pedal is a really key idea for distortion, cuz half of the time it's not your distortion pedal as much as the EQ before and after it.

Classic grunge sound is not metal... Nirvana, for instance, used crappy guitars into a few different distortion boxes into a nicer tube amp (Mesa Boogie .22 i think). You probably don't want to get the MetalZone for grunge... although it is a great sounding pedal.

You are going to want to get a power supply for your pedals. Some pedals (like the MetalZone, for instance) really burn through batteries.

I would suggest your first purchase be an EQ pedal. After that, if you can't dial your distortion in just right, try a DS-1 or an overdrive pedal (nothing extreme, you just want to push your amp). After that... a wah. Dunlop is decent, but try to expiriment with different ones... different wahs have different flavors. You don't always want to sound like everyone else, right?

Saul

Digitech Grunge distortion...only about $40 and really good, better than the Boss DS-1 by far. And get a Dunlop Crybaby which is also really good. I got my Crybaby on eBay for $20.

wawa pedal idk

the Digitech DEATH METAL..pedal is awesome..i use it for everything..from punk rock-rock -to straight up death metal..its great for everything when u combo it with your amps settings! i recommend it..whine and cry..WAH PEDAL..i'd say zakk wylde or dimes or hendrix's

I'd go with a Wah peddle

get one of the Boss multi effect pedals..
I had one a few months ago until someone stole it!!!
It has it all, wah, metal distortion, delay, etc etc....
It has everything!!
