Do u need a good voice to sing heavy metal?!

Question: you must be able to sing, but you don't have to be a really great singer - a great singer can sing perfectly in a pretty broad tonal range; in HM, I think, you just have to sing OK in a certain range, if you don't hit the high notes - fine, doesn't matter, you don't need them anyway...

often the singer makes the difference between a good and a average band, but in my opinion, eg Axl Rose had an awful voice, James Hetfield always had trouble with his singing (he wanted a real singer for Metallica in the early 80s, because he thought his voice isn't good enough)...

ha ha, yes i would think so, a moderate one anyway. =p

Fricken A! Maybe not "good" but strong is a must!! It takes some cojones to do that monster screaming stuff.

well kinda its not that it has to be good but it has to be built up right (practicing alot!) to do it. but i wouldnt recommend too much, because its really bad for your voice.

Well, it depends on what kind of sound you're going for. Max Cavalera from Soulfly admits that he can't sing. He just yells. Then they add on guest singers every now and then to do some actual singing. If you're going to do some mellow songs and then a bunch of heavy songs then yes, you will need a good voice. Most great metal bands can do awesome mellow songs. It doesn't have to be the greatest voice though.

Good metal music has good singers. Period. Look at Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and even Cradle of Filth. Let me ask you this. Do you want to have a lasting career in singing? If so, than proper technique is a MUST, especially in heavy Metal. Singing live every day with improper technique would sound terrible and would be damaging to your voice. With improper technique you can end up with vocal nodules or loose your voice permanently. Do you want that?
Want to sing heavy metal? Do THIS
Purchase "Raise Your Voice" by Jaime Vendera. He is a metal/rock singer coach whos book is aimed at metal singers. It teaches how to properly growl, scream, and how to extend your range. It has a message board where singers (especially metal singers) answer each other's questions. Jaime himself answers many of them. Get it as soon as possible if you want to sing metal. I would also recommend getting at least some singing lessons.

Most of them don't have a good voice.. singing or screaming?
