If you are just starting out, do yourself a favor and get an acoustic- electrics are easier to play, and as such you won't develop the finger strength or dexterity to excel as fast if you aren't as challenged. I'm a big fan of Taylors, and for an intro I'd recommend you look into a Big Baby for portability and price, while maintaining a competitive quality.

Good luck!

unfourtunatly to truly get that sound you would need a 1000 dollar PRS guitar, try an ibanez or fender squire (i also agree with alyosha_... and yamaha makes a great sounding acoustic for about 200 bucks)

Fender has some nice beginner packages, that come with the amp, etc.
Santana's sound is more a factor of his amp than anything.
Unfortunately, he uses Mesa Boogie amps, which are ridiculously expensive.
You can get "kinda" close with a good distortion pedal though.
Go to www.musiciansfriend.com and check some of this stuff out.
That's where I buy most of my gear.

Screw Santana. I bought a $50 acoustic Rogue four years ago, then bought an acoustic-electric Ibanez for over $300 last year. I still use only the Rogue every day - my first and last guitar. It's better to have a big, elegant guitar that you can still throw around rather than worry about the dents you'll inevitably mar your first guitar with. I play acoustic fingerstyle songs.

Go to www.musiciansfriend.com for really good deals.
