Sorry to bring up the "E word" but I was wondering something?!

Question: Can you tell me about "real emo"? You know, bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, and Fugazi. I know a little bit about it, but I was just wondering if you could tell me something about it.

thanks for your help!

Briefly; Emo came out of the Hardcore punk scene in the mid-80s. The bands that came to be described as "Emo" were the bands that had emotional performances and decided to step out of the conventional lyrical themes in hardcore punk and wrote more introspective, emotional songs.

Just a few of the greats;
Heroin
Braid
Boys Life
Fire Party
Embrace
Rites of Spring
Still Life
Indian Summer

It is a shame that Emo has come to be the label for bands such as Fall Out Boy. The original Emo bands were far from corporate Pop.

edit, refutations;
- Fugazi was a punk band, but Emo was a subgenre of Hardcore punks. Fugazi are often credited for influencing what has become Emo today.

- The Cure, while very emotional, are not the Emo archetype.

Real EMO originated from bands like the Cure.

Im not with that EMO crap. Straight hardcore, bang your head on the concrete until you Santa clause and the Easter bunny humping each other on top of a giant can of tuna fish, ROCK AND HEAVY METAL OH YEAAAAAAAAAAA

emo is thrown around, so much I dont even know what it means

Well what do you want to know about it? I mean "emo" is a stereotype but I'm not one of those people who care. It's an amzing genre and I think my personal favorite would be Hawthorne Heights. But if you want to know a band that doesn't have a dead band mate (rip Casey Calvert) then you should check out bands like 30 Seconds To Mars, Aiden, Chiodos, Flyleaf, Dashboard Confessional, Boys Like Girls, We The Kings, Backseat Goodbye is an amazing underground band. And just message me if you need more.

it doesnt send the whole fallout boy or p@td vibe. its not pop crappy or poser. read the lyrics, listen to the vocals, you'll know the difference.
listen to Brand New.

:]

Emo stands for emotional right?, if I'm gonna say a band that was "real" emo or even a song that's real emo I'm gonna seriously say some stuff from elton john, image all the people?, emotional. . .

a basic was to put it is EMOtional, emo guys just use it as an excuse to act like girls, while girls acting emo is just.....hot...lol but ya emo music is ok but heavy metal blows it away

Just a bit of info:

Fugazi is punk, not emo.

Real emo was emotional screamo, a type of metal. So basically, the original "emo" was any type of screamo with lyrics that focused on emotional situations.

Later, it came to settle on band like Dashboard, Jimmy Eat World, Saves the Day, and even Weezer. The bands were just as confused as the rest of the world when the band started being applied to them.

Finally, we have today. A bunch of idiot teenagers use it to describe what they don't like. It's become the next "that's gay" in terms of an insult that makes no real sense. Ask them for an example of what they consider to be "emo" and you'll get many varied and idiotic responses.

emo does mean emotional, and some chick said then elton john and john lennon would be emo. but it depends how you use the word, first of all, i wouldn't say john lennon and elton john are emotional, they're more, "thoughtful". and there are two ways where you can use emo. 1) emotional lyrics for example, "oh i love you but you stabbed my heart out" 2) they just dress emo or you can hear the singer just crying

i'd say mcr is a good example of both ways

It started with bands like Fugazi and Dag Nasty making their music more melodic and handling weightier lyrical themes. Ian Mackaye personally objected to the term "Emo", since "it was trying to say hardcore wasn't emotional before". So I guess it just happened with hardcore bands developing their music. Zach de la Rocha was in an "emo" band called Inside Out before he rapped for Rage Agains the Machine. Anyway, I just asked a question on this subject, so If you could answer it, that would be cool. You could also check out the bands I listed in said question.

you'll know its emo from the lyrics.. that "please dont leave me or i'll die" or "life sucks when you're not around" ...

the amazing riffs.. yes EMO musicians have a knack for making up riffs that get stucked in you're head..

and... the hair. skinny jeans.. fit shirts. pierced face parts.. and guys who have a girly voice when singing

the best emo band that i knoe of here in the philippines.. try TYPECAST and CHICOSCI

First why should be sorry of saying emo if you like emo then so be it you dont have to care what people say and now to answer your question

Emo started in Washington D.C. with the band Rites Of Spring (which are very good) because they started writing lyrics about what they felt. Another influential band was Embrace (even tough they only released 1 LP). Sunny Day Real Estate (one of my fav bands btw) helped to start the second emo wave in the 90's (their most important album is Diary) Fugazi was also very influential.

Now many bands are being labeled emo like FOB and MCR but they are not truly emo altough they write about their feelings (By saying they are not emo im not saying they are not good in fact I like their music a lot) these bands are said to be the "third emo-wave"

Many people believe being emo means having your hair over 1 eye, being gay or bisexual (which is not bad) and dressing with tight clothing but that is not true that is just people that stereotype emo's to bother them.

Hope this helped
