Why do some musicians change the tuning on their guitar ex) tune down 1/2?!

Question: Tuning the low E string down to D created a heavier bar chord sound which sort of defined the grunge sound of the 90's.

I ask guitar players to tune down 1/2 a step from the standard 440hz tuning because it helps increase my vocal range within songs I already know.

Banjos and eukalalis usually have all the strings tuned to the same note like G or E.

It's all math really and how you want to play. Check out guitar tunings from Soundgarden's Superunknown record. Freaky.

To make it easier for the vocalist to hit the notes.

there can be several reasons to do this:

to get a deeper fatter tone,
the strings feel looser making bends easier,
to match covers recorded this way(like most Van Halen tunes),
to match the singers range

it sound brutal
