Metalheads.... Have you ever refused to like a band because of their lyrical con!

Question: A band that you find decent musically but you just can't say "I like this band" because the lyrical content is just so lame....

For example. I'm not a huge fan of Black Metal as a whole... Musically I think a lot of these bands rank "pretty good........to awsome" but I just find what a lot of them sing about is so lame sometimes.

Secondly, (don't be alarmed) I'm not the biggest fan of Cannibal Corpse, I mean sure it's been a year since I've given them a listen but I find bands that only sing about gore and mutilation is a bore (plus I guess maybe I don't appriciate the music fully). The exception to that is Dying Fetus... those guys are just too funny.

Also, a friend of mine listened to Deicide for the 1st time and said he disliked them not because the music sucked but it was just too "Satanic". And although he is not a Christian, and was not "offended", he still found that the lyrics were just going too far.

Anyone else get turned off by decent bands because of lyrics?

Before, I was into this type of music (Death, Black, & Grindcore Metal). But now, I became a bit detached. Yes probably because of the lyrical content. Yes, they have talent in terms of those particular subgenres. But right now, I moved on. But I really don't hate them. It's just that my musical preferences have changed. And in my case, too much "extreme" form of metal kinda influenced my outlook in life in much the same way as their messages. So I stopped. But not really rejected. I still sometimes listen to them as trip down "memory lane" during my metal days, and I still check out the scene from time-to-time.

**let me add: I don't really want to hate a music genre (or a band) as much as possible, because music is art and is subjective. But yes, as humans we have preferences and dislikes, but I just you know, stay in a neutral ground as much as possible if I really don't like a band or a genre.

Cattle Decapitation because of there strong Pro Veg music, that type of stuff does not belong in death metal, its okay if they decide to be vegan, but to then go ahead and make non stop don't eat meat music, then it does get annoying and makes them look like some emo kids

Most reasons why I dislike bands due to lyric contents is when bands get way to political, or just down right liberals. When it comes to bashing President Bush, the war or so. It just gets old, every band tries to jump on that band wagon going all political. I would rather listen to a vocalist rip up the mic about gore or such than to hear a political speech.

There have been some great bands with awesome tunes that I don't care for because the lyrics are just lame. There are even a few Beatles songs in this category! A lot of the death metal stuff I dig is more melodic and rhythmically appealing, and most of the time I can't understand the lyrics anyway, so they can't bug me. I couldn't get into anything that was preaching hatred and violence, like neo-Nazi, white supremest, industrial hardcore. Even if the tunes were great, I just wouldn't be able to enjoy it, and I certainly wouldn't spend money on it.

yes....christian "metal" bands no matter how good they are I wont listen to them because it seems too hypocritical to me. When banging my head to my music I want to hear about death and gore and throw in the devil, but hearing someone guttural the word jesus just aint cool

As long as they sound good thats all that matters to me. Most of the time is hard to tell what they are saying anyway without looking up the lyrics =)

Long live heavy metal and long live offended lyrics. after all it's just music like it's not telling you to go out and kill.Music doesn't make you kill you yourself makes that choice to do so.Why does everybody jump to the idea that that person is that way because of the music he or she listens to.... I say it's just music and turn it up.......

I don't think it's just lyrics that turn me off. Sometimes it's vocals. I get tired of the cookie monsters and high shrieks. I like black metal but the shrieking vocals are a turn off. I'd think they'd have some operatic vocals when i'd hear but you can't have it all.

At times I judge...Motley Crue...Girls Girls Girls...etc...

I used to have kind of a problem with lyrics when I was a christian, but now that i'm not anymore I love extreme death/black metal. It's the christian metal that gets under my skin now. Not that I hate christians, but it just seems so lame. Metal doesn't seem like the best genre to gush your love for god. The most talented bands as far as overall musicianship goes are the ones with crazy or harsh lyrics in my opinion.

I like all Black/Death metal....the gorier, the better. But I draw the line when a band preaches about hate and white supremacy and the like.

It's hard for me to listen to Rage Against the Machine ever since I "grew up" because the lyrics are so extreme-Left, pro-Socialism BS.
Politically-charged music, in general, is difficult to listen to, since most of the time it just comes off as comical and embarassing because they don't know enough of what they're singing about to actually put their opinions across intelligently. Example: I cannot listen to God Forbid for this exact reason... that and the fact that the riffs are lame and the songs lack structure.
The Deicide thing I can agree with to an extent. I tend to look at those bands as entertainers. It's all part of a show, etc.
The one I refuse to listen to because of lyrics/beliefs is Burzum. This guy (Varg) is a complete lunatic. His themes are all anti-life, anti-Christian, pro-murder, etc.
Also, the neo-Nazi bands. Hate has no place in music, unless used in abstract terms. If you're using your music to try and spread a message of hate, then I won't lose any sleep when the worst possible end result happens to you.
