The way I learned was playing covers like you wanna do. Honestly the way I warmed up for playing was by playing covers of songs. The best way to warm up and get faster is by practicing. Alot of people hate to hear it but if you practice enough you will get good. I've been playing for 4 years and the best way to get good is to do exactly what you are doing. Looking up tabs and playing covers to start is the best way to learn. Soon enough you will be playing your own songs.

Any guitar for beginners book should have a basic song that they teach you to get you used to fretting. Something along the line of "E-ride" or nearly that effect.

on a stick?

learn your scales they will increase your response time. also do finger and hand stregthening excersise to improve dexterity.

just do finger excercises to get your fingers used to it. also stretch your fingers.

This is how I usually warm up.

E-------------------------------------...
B-------------------------------------...
G-------------------------------1-2-3-...
D---------------------1-2-3-4--
A-----------1-2-3-4-
E-1-2-3-4-

And then just go down from your high E string, from 4 to 1 on all of your strings. Start out slowly, and then gradually get a little bit more quick each time.

Learn the fingering for chords. Practice playing them until you can jump from one chord to another without too much delay. Practice scales to teach your fingers to hit the notes that your brain tells them to. Then you can play a song over and over 'till it sounds good - listen to the CD to get the rhythm right. Of course once you're better, you'll just play a song first try.
Mainly your fingers have to get used to the movements.

Guitar magazines such as guitar world has many scales and exercises with articles explaining them. Also has a lot of ads of books you can buy, and 3 or 4 popular songs with tabs.

just pick your nose for an hour as a warm up,
lol......

Here's a good exercise that you can do to learn the fretboard,& work on your speed , learn how to play your scales in every key (do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do) don't frustrate yourself by trying to play them fast at first. learn how to play them correctly, and work on your speed as you feel comfortable with it. the more that you practice, the faster you'll be able to play them. check out this website, www.chordhouse.com It teaches guitar, piano chords, and bass notes. check it out (click on the "guitar easy") link
