Has anyone heard Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart?!

i think it's great, crazy L.S.D inspired demented blues....but "safe as milk" is an easier listen by beefheart....i'd recommend that first then Trout Mask Replica
More of a musicians and critics album than for casual listening, His R+B stompers are more fun.
It's a very interesting album, I can't say a masterpiece cause it's just too "progressive" for my taste. You'll often find the album in the very top of "500 greatest albums of all time" lists (eg Rolling Stone's). It's very weird music, but with a lot of catchy tunes. I remember when I heard Dachau Blues for the first time I thought it was crap, and then for the whole week I couldn't get that song out of my head. Then I actually started liking it. My favorite would definitely be Moonlight on Vermont.
Well, I've always heard it was an essential album. When I finally got around to buying it and listening to it, I didn't know what to make of it. It's very discordant and out there. There are some bright flashes on that album, but overall I don't think it's all it's cracked up to be.
Trout Mask Replica is widely considered to be Beefheart's masterpiece by critics but whether a person will like it or not all depends on the listener. I personally love the album and it is among my favorite albums but I also know a lot of people who think it's the worst thing they've ever heard. I admit, the first time I listened to the album, I thought it was a joke. I continued to listen to it though and I don't know what happened but eventually, I really started to enjoy listening to the album. If you've never listened to Beefheart's work, I wouldn't recommend starting out with Trout Mask Replica. The album is very complex and even confusing at times. Try listening to his first album, Safe As Milk, first and then listen to Trout Mask Replica. I can't guaranty that you will like it but who knows, it might just be the best thing you've ever heard.
