I hate to say this, but some of the above answers aren't quite right.
Here are the dates of the composers given so far, with Beethoven's name thrown in:

Vivaldi (1675-1741)
Clementi (1752-1832)
Mozart (1756-1791)
Beethoven (1770-1827)
Chopin (1810-1849)

I thought that Dittersdorf (1739-1799) and Schubert (1797-1828) would be good answers, since their music sounds the most like Beethoven's music.
But now that I look up their dates, I find that those aren't hot answers either.

Beethoven was a student of Haydn (1732-1809), who was a generation older, and a teacher of Liszt (1811-1886), who was a generation younger.
If your teacher wants a composer born in the same generation, that might be difficult.

Anyway, here is a good Wikipedia page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beethoven_a...

That page mentions Hummel, whose best-known composition is a trumpet concerto, and Cherubini, whose best-known compositions are an oipera and a church composition.

Mozart and Haydn are both known for their piano compositions and are considered Classical composers.
Chopin and Liszt are also known for their piano compositions, but they are considered Romantic composers.
Probably your best bets are Mozart and Haydn.

Muzio Clementi, Mozart?

Shubert is I suppose, but Beethoven was the first composer to use the modern Piano and no one has ever written for it with a fuller understanding of the instrument.

Schubert is the obvious answer. Although younger than Beethoven - he was a contemporary. He actually attended Beethoven's funeral (he idolized ol' Ludwig).
He is famous for his piano works and his lieder.
Of course he also wrote 9 Symphonies.

contemporaries of Beethoven (1770 - 1827) they were famous for their piano pieces were

- Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809)
he composed 11 piano concertos, 46 piano trios, 52 piano sonatas, some cappricios and piano variations

- Frederic Chopin (1810 - 1849)
Waltzes, Polonaises, Nocturnes, Mazurkas, Etudes

- Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828)
despite he wrote several pieces for piano he wasn't that famous as "piano composer". he is more famous for his Lieder (songs).
he also wrote 21 piano sonatas (but completed only 12), 8 impromptus, the famous military march and some other piano works.
