Does your voice sound the same to others as it does to you?!

Question: When I sing, I sound okay to myself but others dont think so..
And also like if I record something like on my answering machine, my voice sounds alot higher.
Do I hear my voice the way others do or not?
Best guesses?
Thanks!

Dear Clandest...,

No, what you hear when you are singing and speaking is different from what everyone else hears. When you speak or sing air is resonating inside your chest, throat, mouth, face, and nasal passages/cavities. All this moving air inside you gives your voice a slightly different timbre—sound quality.

For example: Have you ever laid your head down on a table or desk and then tapped your fingers on the surface. With your ear pressed against the desk the sound is much different because it is not only being heard, but also, interacting with your body in the form of vibrations. In other words, the sound is different because you are using more than just your ears to record the sensory information.

Recording yourself is one way to discover what you really sound like. However, an answering machine isn’t a good test. I have never met an answering machine with high quality recording ability and secondly people change their voices when they speak on the phone. Many women speak more animatedly and subsequently higher when they are on the phone. As you can see, answering machine recordings aren’t reliable forms of recording.

I highly recommend investing in a recording device. It is important for singers to bond with the sound of their voice and it can be very useful when practicing. It catches simple mistakes from phrasing to pitch that you may have missed when you were singing.

Good luck and happy singing!

your like all those people from american idol auditions who think they can sing, when they suck at life.

when you hear your voice when you talk you are hearing the sound conducted through bone. when you record it or others hear it, the sound is conducted through the air. that is why it sounds different when you talk and when you hear it on your answering machine.

My voice doesn't sound the same to others as it does to me. For school I sometimes have to do audio recordings, and I always seem to sound different on them. =)

It could be something to do with the audio, or maybe because the sounds are further away.

even though i know i cant sing if i here my voice recorded on anything it sounds alot higher too.

yeah i always wonder about this too.

but the problem, is its hard to know what u soundl ike to others. Even on recordings, depending on the mic, or system, ull get diff sounds. certain singers sound crap on one mic but awesome on another mic, of the same type (i.e. dynamic mic) And certainly u sound diff on bad quality recordings as well.

from personal experience ,i sound good on my church's sound system and Shure dynamic mics, but my own condenser mic and crappy karoake mics, i sound bad. it depends...

but yeah i really want to find the exact match for my voice, the system and the mics so that i can make better recordings....
