What's wrong with old music?!

Question: At school I am constantly getting mad fun of for my music tastes. I like bands like the Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, U2, Genesis, The Beatles, The Doors, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, etc. People in my school don't know who the Rolling Stones are! I'm getting made fun of because no one knows the bands (except the Beatles). People instantly judge my bands. I tell them that I like music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. They go, "EWWW! They are OLD!" When I asked them what music they liked, they started listing all these rappers and hip hop bands. I overheard a conversation where a girl said, "Wow, that song's 5 months old! It's ANCIENT!!" They listen to month old songs that eventually disappear and I listen to music that is about 40 years old that still plays on the radio. The music my friends listen obviously talk about drugs, sex and violence. At least some of my music actually hides it rather than it being obvious. I keep on asking them, "What's wrong with old music?"

I Absolutely Love every band you just listed!!!! my friends are the same way!!!! They are always listening to these crap rapper bands, while I listen to The animals, The Who, The Clash, The Kinks etc, I say they just do not have good music taste. There is nothing wrong with the music we like, they are just into the mainstream music which everyone has heard of, they just like to fit in with the crowd. There music is cool for what like 5 months like you said, my music is cool forever. Who cares what they think, if its what you like then it shouldn't matter!!! Good Luck!!!!

I've been asked if reggae was "like witchcraft".
People are ******* stupid.

I know your pain, I am into all those bands that you listed, there is nothing wrong with old music, if anything it is generally better and more inspiring than any stupid hip-hop gangsta songs that we have around today. Music wouldn't be what it is today without the Rolling Stones and the greatest guitarist in the world... Jimi Hendrix.

Tell them to "shut their pie hole" or "rub salt in their ***" flounce your hair and walk off, bopping to your tunes!

Forget them.
Everyone has their own taste in music. Don't change yourself for them and who cares what they listen to?

Nothing, I'm 16 and enjoy all of that. Of course I like new music too, but i'm a no boundries music personality. Not enough of the younger generation is like that.

Its soooooooo overplayed! I'm SICK of hearing it!
And the most annoying part about it is the 50+ year olds
actually think it's the only good music ever recorded!

Mick Jagger can't sing, and their music is boring.
Jimi Hendrix? Sorry, but feedback and distortion ISN'T talent!

Your music is waaay better than the music they listen to. Just remember that.

i like the oldies too, but i like mostly country.... and everone is like " i hate country... blah blah blah......" so i just dont say any thing when they any me wht kind i like.... but im starting to like rock now too..... so yea.... im sorry people are stupid....... cause they are...

piss on em one day they will learn. I was made fun of for listening to 80s rock while i was in high school in the mid 90s. Yeah my Motley Crue and others are still out there jamming while there rap crap is dead and gone and forgotten

the only thing wrong with old music is that it should be the music we have now. a LOT of the music we have today is really sorry and i miss the old stuff.
the real question is: whats wrong with the people that make fun of you for liking good music?
answer: they are complete noobs with no real sense of good music.

dude i feel the same way, I'm 16 and I'm a blues kinda guy

what you got to understand is that most people only like music because their friends like it, and they will never have an open mind to older or different music
its a sad reality

Music is such a personal choice. It's whatever connects with you on an emotional level. Would your friends think a book was dumb because it was written that long ago, or how about a painting? Art is what it is. Listen to your own feelings and don't worry about your peer group's artistic tastes (I know, easier said than done), but eventually, you'll be out of school and you will gravitate to people who share your tastes and values rather than just classes. Give it time, they may change their minds, and you may change yours. I do give you credit for reaching out to different musical styles that aren't marketed for your demographic. I'm sure you're an intelligent person and will go far.

nothings worng with that!
you should go to my school ppl love old and new music there lol but not much ppl at my school like rap were mostly rockers (I am) and some ppl listen to pop as well

Don't sweat it Libby...you can't help it if you've actually got good taste in music. Rock on sweetie!

nothin thats what i listin to and im 11

Do you go to school on Uranus??

Kids today are totally clueless! These are the same punks hitting up the Hannah Montana and Teen Idol bullsh!t... its all about the Classics!

i was talking to this kid about ac/dc and he thought i was talking about science, no clue they were a band......sad sad world we live in, but i like all genre's of music except for rap, cant spell cRAP without rap

The probably just don't understand your taste in music.

A lot of music is waste these days, and many people only like that kind of music, and since you're not one of them, I guess that's the reason why you're teased.

Gotta know where you've been to know where you're going. The classics are named classics for a reason--they set the stage for pretty much everything we hear today. So don't sweat it. Like what you like, and who gives a crap if people can't see how influential these bands were (namely Jimi, Stones, Beatles, Doors). The only problem I have with them is that they can get overplayed. I swear, Ford ruined Journey's "Any Way You Want It" for me.

there is absolutly nothing wrong with that music i actually love listening to the classic music because you know when the next generation comes around that music will still be good my mother actually was surprised at how many Hank Williams Jr songs i have on my Zune and i also have Journey U2 my fav band and Rolling Stones as well and many others as well and i am 21 so its not like i was around in the 70's

also i dont know how old you are but i can guarentee you that when your friends grow up and quit listening to the rap crap as i call it you know the stuff you cant understand what they are saying half the lime they will realize that the music you listen to is actually really good music

you go to school with idiots! most of my music is 70's and 80's stuff like punk and new wave post-punk or whatever.

For most people music is a commodity, like underarm deodorant. If your pit wipe is 5 months old, it's definitely time to get a new rollon. It was the same when I went to school though too (in the 70s)--with all that great stuff around, people at school were still listening to whatever topped the charts that week, and a lot of them couldn't believe you were listening to the stuff you were listening to (even when it came out at the same time as theirs!). Look back at record charts from the early 70s and you can't believe the goofy junk that was hits: "Amazing Grace" played by a Scottish bagpipe band, "The Lord's Prayer" sung by a nun, "Babe What Would You Say" by Hurricane Smith (not to mention "Seasons in the Sun" and "Playground in My Mind"). I guess what I'm trying to say is that most people (in any era) don't really care too much about the music--it's just like wallpaper to them (something in the background).

that's right, when you attend your 20th high school reunion? just remind them of who they listened too, and we'll see if it's Lynyrd skynyrd's "sweet home alabama" or the black-eyed-peas' "my humps" that is still in heavy radio rotation....just remember, Elvis may have left the building, but Justin Timberlake never even got in the door (to the same building)...does that make any sense?
