I would advise not to waste money on a cheap bass guitar, and go straight to a professional bass guitar. I would recommend the Fender Precision bass guitar. I am not mainly a bass player, but I've played bass. I think if you bought a 4 string bass with frets and was in good condition, like a Fender Precision, even a Japanese made one, you would be happier in the long run. You can't take short cuts in learning an instrument. For example I used to think that cheaper 61 key keyboards with smaller keys were easier to play, but actually a full weighted 88 key keyboard is easier, because you can feel your way around the keyboard easier, and if you make a mistake it might not be heard. You could probably apply the same logic to an easy to play bass guitar. A professional instrument is usually easiest to play, so go with an established name like Fender Precision. Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy tried many bass guitars and finally settled on the Fender Precision. The only other consideration I would have for beginners is possibly the weight, so maybe a Japanese made Fender Precision to start off with, which is probably lighter. I used to have a Japanese made Stratocaster, and it was really nice. I also had a Fender Precision, but traded it for a Steinberg Spirit, because they stay in tune longer, but the neck doesn't have a head, so it's a little more advanced.

I would say an Ibanez, it is lighter than the average bass, and has good action.

Cool man, I just started playing the bass. I went to the music store that my friends go to a lot (they've played guitars for years and know the sales persons etc) and I got a Yamaha RBX170 (http://www.yamaha.com/guitars/products/p... and a Crate Bass amp. I've been told from a few different Sources that you want to stay away from the " Guitar and Amp and Starter Kit for 200$" because it won't sound good so you wont like playing it.

1. Dean
2. Yamaha
3. Ibanez
4. Epiphone
5. Fender

These are all real decent brand names to start with

Good luck

Get a Fender Bronco bass, cuz it has a shorter scale (easy to play) and a maple fingerboard. Or a Fender Mustang ( costs more) , but also short-scale w/ maple fingerboard. Look for a Fender Musicmaster bass, too, but they are hard to find. All these basses are very easy to learn on.

Also, check out the Epiphone EBO.

I would recommend a Peavey Millenium 4 string. Very affordable and a lot better than Squier or most other beginner basses, IMO.

Fender Standard Precision or Jazz (which ever you prefer, Mexican version)
Ibanez GSR 200 (I started out on this bass)
OLP (I heard this are good for beginners, but I never played one yet)
