The thing you need most is determination. I self taught me how to play, and it wasn't the stuff i had that did me any good. It was my determination to end the reputation of a bunch of bass guitar player wannabes, so i taught myself.

All you need is a bass guitar if you are really determined.
A book helps, a teacher helps, an amp and patch cord would help alot, and so would a tuner. The bass guitar you buy doesn't matter, as long as it is in good condition and works. Yes, some basses have a much cleaner tone and are more versitile than others, but it is the player that makes the bass, not the bass that makes the player. Theres a guy in my class that thinks the opposite, and you can see from his playing that he has a wrong opinion (he has the most expensive bass you could find, and can't play a scale yet)
I believe you can do it. Determination and an instrument are all that you need.

Bass requires a lot of power so you will need a large amp. For practice you should use no smaller than a 12" speaker. Start with a basic bass and trade up if you stick with it. Make sure you start with very smoothe strings or you will hurt your fingers so much that you will give up. Get a book on beginning bass and have fun. Once you learn the scale, you can practice by playing along to your cd's.

First off ya gonna need a base guitar obviously second a amp ya can still learn with out an amp but and to learn to play i suggest downloading tabliture of the net get an afex pedal but it can wait it not necessary for learning but grate for a good affect and some songs wont sound right unless they are distorted with an afex pedal

A bass guitar, ears and fingers (though I suppose you could improvise). Thats all you need.

An amp certainly helps but you can start learning without one.

Lessons help too but you can just start by playing along with your favorite songs. Tecnique drills can really help too and you can teach yourself these from a book or from many sources.

ok u need a bass amazingl, a amp, a cable maybe a book, an outlet a teacher and a loaded gun to ur head

things you'll need:

bass guitar (go to a guitar shop and ask for one)
amplifier
you
audio player
your brain and ears
bass guitar software or ultimate guitar

that's it. you are a bass player.
