Do you keep your love of classical music a secret?!

Question: I'm a highschooler, and you know, everyone listens to rap or whatever. Everyones so against classical music( that i know of), so I just kind of don't tell any of my friends. Do you feel this way too?
Also, do you get really mad when people talk crap about classical music? I do!

No. Why would I hide something I love? Why does it matter what anyone else thinks about the music you love? It makes you happy, who cares what anyone else thinks? Your real friends won't care about something you love.
It would be a little weird if I hid it...I'm studying music in college...

If people "talk crap" about classical music, know this -- they wouldn't have their beloved "rap or whatever" WITHOUT classical music. Music started somewhere. If you want to see my point in action, look for "The Pachelbel Rant" on YouTube. It's a comedian talking about how Pachelbel follows him around everywhere. He gives a great visual on how classical music influences the music world around us.

So remember -- your real friends won't care about what music you love. The ones who do care aren't worth being friends with. After you get out of high school -- no one gives a damn about your clothing brands or what music you listen to.

When I was in high school, I was a diligent violin student, so everyone knew of my affinity toward classical music.
I was on a crusade to stamp out popular music, but I wasn't very diplomatic about it. I was in no position to complain "when people talked crap about classical music," because I did the exact same thing.

There's no reason to keep it a secret. I listen to it, plus a lot of other genre's (except TOP 40 pop, new country, etc.).

The reason Johnny Cash covered Nine Inch Nails and Alice in Chains is because he realized a good song is a good song, no matter who wrote it originally. I'm using this for an example because I bet you can find a current artist (even rap) who've used a classical song to help them construct one of their own. You might be able to ease them into it going this route.

It's your choice anyway, so don't be embarrased....

What a shame. I feel for you; and consider your situation to be just another sad commentary on our present day hedonistic culture; that is, that you don't feel comfortable sharing your love of classical music with your friends.

Don't any of them, not even one, share your taste in music?

You're a teen-ager, I'm an old-timer: 73 yrs. old. But I'm very proud of my musical taste, and would shout it from the house tops, if need be.

For someone to be "against classical music" in my book, is someone not worth knowing. Be proud of who you are and your tastes; it to me demonstrates that you are on a much higher rung on the scale of spiritual evolution, than any of your friends.

Regards,

Alberich

No, I don't. I am actively involved in promoting classical music (it is the main reason I contribute on YA Classical Music). I am an amateur musicologist and frankly derisive of most modern forms of music (there are exceptions but not really that many). I understand that you are expiriencing peer pressure to conform by listening to that sonic crap they called music (be it rap, grunge, death metal or other such nonsense).
I would recommend that you are more circumspect about who you hang out with if your highschool acquaintances are so feeble minded that they can't appreciate the beauty of classical music. If you are a true appreciator of the artform then you should be unapologetic about it.
Yes, I do get mad when people talk a bunch of baloney about music - their ignorance is immediately revealed.
Never mind though - you be glad to know there are a lot more people like yourself out there than you realise.

I felt that way in high school and definitely didn't have anybody to talk to it about it, and that was 40 years ago and there was no internet to find other listeners. As an adult everyone knows we go but the response isn't much better, but we do have a few friends in our building we run into at the Opera or Philharmonic, which certainly helps. Last Sunday my wife even ran into someone from her health club at a New Viennese School (SCHOENBERG, BERG and WEBERN) chamber music concert, which was kind of amazing. As an adult I don't find people are against classical music but rather say stupid things about it. Don't despair classical music has been a great part of my life for all of these years.

I love classical music and people used to tease me about it but I just ignore them now.

I think that what other people think about me shouldn't make me who I am.

I'm sure when you get older, you will meet people that also like classical music, just like you. So then you can share your love for this kind of music. Be proud of yourself to have such a great taste in music.
When I was young I never told my friends I liked classical music. It wasn't necessary, because they hardly knew it existed! And when they talked crap about it, I didn't get mad, I just said I didn't agree.
I like it and I will always do. I'm so happy when I'm singing in my opera choir.

I never keep it a secret nor do I ever push it into other people's faces. Perhaps you should hang around more sensible people? My peers in school would have never EVER denigrated my tastes in music (to my face atleast...) Anyone who says they are "against" Classical Music has no clue what they are talking about. I dare you to ask them to give you the names (composers/titles) of: a Symphony, a Lied, a Mélodie, a String Quartet, a Concerto, an Opera, a Ballet - I bet they couldn't name one if their life depended on it! (Why would they hate it if they don't know anything about it, I wonder?) Just browsing through a G.Henle catalogue, I mourn the fact that even if I could live to be 350 years old, I would never be able to aqcuaint myself to a fraction of the music that is out there (I have yet to listen to more of Yun Isang's operas, all of Carl Nielsen's symphonies, Reynaldo Hahn's piano music, Brahms' choral music, all of Schoenberg's Lieder, etc.....) If someone says they "don't like Mahler's Resurrection Symphony", I can accept that. If someone says "I like Brahms' Lieder, but I'm not too fond of his orchestral stuff", again, nothing wrong with that. If someone says "Oh, I don't know ANYTHING about classical music", that's fine as well. But when someone says they hate Classical Music, I know immediately that they are just totally stupid and their opinion pretty much means nothing. So next time someone talks "crap" about Classical Music, you can laugh about how incredibly dumb they are (and tell them to crawl back to the cave from whence they came...)

since i'm am in high school. all of my friends litsen to pop, rock, death metal, or rap. they rave about their fave 'artists', like Soulja Boy, or Snoop Dog.
....and then they listen to my ipod. they are amazed.(they thought i was one of them)
they say 'eww', but they don't understand. they think i'm a dork (i am also in the school and county orchestras)
they don't understand that moment when ... i feel like picking up the nearest pencil and waving my arms(as if conducting) to Mozart's 41st symphony or Beethoven's 5th.
so don't be scared! i've been there too! share your love! make them listen! it is real music!

No, I don't. I have long passed the age when I care what other people think of me. I have never and will never be "cool" anyway.
I listen to what I want and the rest of the world can go and listen to pop/rap/hip hop rubbish !

I am a high-schooler, playing first chair violinist in xhamber orchestra. The only one who knows I know about 300 classical compositions by heart is Second chair, and he knows about 500, so he doesn't care.

Sorry no lv here. But don't keep your true self a secret.

I really hate it when people talk bad about classical music, because it has so much genius in it. I mean, rap is just screaming to a beat. Where's the talent in that?

You shound definately not be ashamed of your love for classical music. I love it to, so you are not alone. Don't be afraid to express who you are!!

No, I don't keep my love of classical music a secret. My CDs are all displayed for everyone to see in my family room and yet no one plays them except me. I even play piano by ear a little but I buy music books for advanced students.

I recall a friend telling me it's a waste of my time to listen to "old" music. I told him he didn't know zilch what he was talking about.

Absolutly not!

If you like it, & I am thrilled that you DO like classical music!

That is NEVER anything to be embarresed about!

I get pisssed off too, at those kind of people that dis classical music!

No Classical music has well has all music is to be shared so that all can enjoy. It is away to build on peoples relaxation

haha, I'm in high school and I love classical music! Everybody knows it too. And actually, I spend like half my life defending classical music. But that's easy because it's obviously so much better than rap. :)
