^^ Good answer and the best way to start off.

There are plenty of variations to rapping. Try to listen to as much as you can and rap along to find a pace and style you are comfortable with.

At this stage I also recommend listening to non-commertial rap, as the rap in the top 40's like 50cent and co is pretty generic and their lyrics lacking in originality. I recommend listening to Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique, RA Rugged Man, Ill Bill, Cage, Apathy, Tak (S.O.B.) Aesop Rock. All have unique qualities you can learn from.

Once you get used to rapping other peoples stuff, it might be a good idea to download some instrumental breaks (Music tracks with no lyrics) If you're still not comfortalbe with writing your own lyrics, try and fit someone elses to the beat and practice your rhyme.

Once you get a good sence of rhyme you'll be able to create rhymes in your head to a beat, and you'll then have to practice turning those throughts into a clear rapping voice.

To help you write your own lyrics, I recommend a program called McGills Ryming Dictionary 2.0.

Best way to practice rapping is to actually listen to different rappers and rap along with them, when you feel you got the rhythm down then you can start free styling on your own.

I like The House of Pain too (the remix of "Jump Around is off the hook!!). The first rule of rap is that you've got to BELIEVE it. If you're trying to rap and all the while you're thinking to yourself, "I sound ridiculous", whoever is listening will think the same thing. Second rule, pick a topic and stay with it. That way, you have a frame in which to put your thoughts. Finally (especially if you're freestyling), pick a slow beat or start out slowly. This gives you time to think of words that rhyme to go at the end of your lines and keeps you within your topic. It will get easier the more you do it. No worries!
