Slipknot has never written a song explaining the masks, however I do believe that the masks have been discussed on shows such as The Sauce on Fuse and in the band's DVD.
The masks are used to draw the attention away from themselves and to the music, as one of the posters above me stated.

there isn't a song that explains why. i own all the cd's and they don't sing about that. maybe your friend saw an interview where they explained why they wear the masks. but not in a song.
